morels!?

by Dana McMahan » Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:01 pm

It's the time of year I start jonesing for morels. Last year I scored a big bag of them from a festival in Estill County [http://www.flickr.com/photos/travelingmcmahans/sets/72157617312775044/]. That was fun, but it would be nice to get some closer to home. If you hear of anybody's brother, cousin or neighbor that's got some they'll sell please speak up! :)
Of course last year my *own* brother found a couple hundred literally in his backyard and I never saw a single one.

Believe it or not, I recently saw some at the Highland's Kroger. They were in the back of the produce section, by the pre-sliced and packaged fruits. There were several types of mushrooms that you could purchase by weight and I was surprised to see them there. That was a couple of weeks ago; hopefully they'll still be carrying them.

My brother lives in Clark Co., Indiana and he goes "shrooming" all the time. He's quite the morel hunter. I've dropped him a line to see if he'd be interesting in finding some for you.

I participated in probably one of the biggest Morel harvests on the planet...ever. Spring 2003, Minnesota River bottoms near Sleepy Eye, MN...myself and 5 or 6 friends harvested almost 20 BUSHELS of morels in four days. At the time fresh Morels were going for $400 a bushel. Schwing. :D

I am quite interested in going to Estill Co. A friends cousin has a restaurant up there.
Was it worth the trip?
