Fresh Cheeses

by Michelle R. » Fri Feb 19, 2010 4:26 pm

While in Wisconsin, visiting my husband's relatives, we visited a dairy that had fresh cheese, made on premises. No Kroger, no Whole Foods, just a farm, some cows, and the scent of cheese. My question is this, is there any place like this within an hour or two of Louisville? My husband is a cheese curd fanatic, and wants some that are fresh, slightly warm, and still squeaky. Does a place like this exist around here, or will he have to wait until the next time we drive out to Wisconsin?

Capriole Farm in Greenville, Indiana does fresh goat cheese. Not sure if they offer any other types.

FWIW, Capriole only does goat cheese. But, it is oh so good goat cheese.

Kenny's does all types, and I think it's very good.

I've had a couple of cheeses from this Nicholasville,KY farm and have been very impressed. I've purchased it at Lotsa Pasta but they may be available elsewhere.

We're looking for an actual dairy that's within an hour or two of Louisville to take a nice drive, and get some fresh cheese curds on premises. So far, Kenny's is looking promising.

Michelle,

I'm not aware of the Abbey doing any (farm) tours or selling cheese curds. They have a gift shop which sells their commercially available cheese, fudge, etc. It has however been several years since I've been there.

Kenny's is definately worth a call to see if they see if they have the experience ( and curds) you are looking for. They are great people.

Another lead in the quest for fresh cheese curds....

I just picked up some "JD Country Milk" at ValuMarket in the Highlands. I hadn't noticed this particular brand until today. But it's local and in glass bottles, so I thought we should give it a try. I also grabbed a brochure that I read when I got home.

The brochure says..."We welcome you to visit our store on the farm for a variety of cheeses, farm eggs, roll butter, summer sausage, soy candles and other natural products" Store hours listed are Tues - Fri 9-5, Sat 9-3, closed Sun & Mon.

Contact info:
Willis & Edna Schrock
1050 Ellis Road
Russellville, KY 42276
Phone: 270-726-2200
Email: willschro@aol.com
Facebook: jdcountrymilk

Here's the website although it doesn't provide as much info as the brochure.

Marty Rosen had an article in Wednesdays features section of the CJ. JD Country Milk was sold under the name of Rebekah Grace in the past. It is a low temp pasteurized milk and NOT homogenized.
Being sold at Valu Mart and Burgers and soon at Whole Foods. Sold in glass bottles that have a deposit on them. He was especially complimentary about the whole milk buttermilk.

I hadn't tried the milk at the time I wrote the previous post, but the 2% tastes like whole milk to me. Very good.
