Fresh Banana Leaves

by Michele Brinke » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:18 am

Does anyone know where I can get fresh banana leaves in town? I'm hosting a Caribbean Island Party that's going to feature a whole smoked pig. I actually want the leaves for the buffet table so they need to be fresh not frozen. I've tried Creation Gardens and they will only sell me a 10# case, thats a whole lot of leaves and probably a whole lot of money. I've also check some ethnic markets but they only had frozen. I did find them at Jungle Jims last weekend for $1.99 #, but only had a 10 day shelf life. The party isn't until mid Feb., and I don't think I can make it back there before then.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

You could substitute some palm fronds that you should be able to get from any florist fairly cheap.

One thing to keep in mind here is palms are most often grown as a ornamental crop in Florida. They are notorious in the industry as being one of the most heavily sprayed(fungicide/pesticide)plants. If you do go this route just be sure to give those guys a good wash.
Kind of a bummer,I just cut back a number of bananas that we overwinter here in the greenhouses. I pitched them in the compost just yesterday.I am pretty sure I have seen them over at the Iroquois valuemarket, if you have not already checked them out.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
