Hot Cocoa

by Joseph M » Tue Jan 19, 2010 2:51 am

I'm looking for some good, high quality cocoa powder to make my favorite winter drink. Does anyone have any suggestions.

When I feel like splurging, I'll make the more tedious drinking chocolate, but for now I'm just looking for a good go-to cocoa powder that might be a little bit better quality than Nestle...

I've never used anything but Nestle, but if that's all ya got, add a dash of cayenne to the mix. I loooove it.

I have always used Droste. It is Dutch-processed from the Netherlands. I think I last got it at Campbell's or Lotsa.

We also use either Droste or Penzeys Mint. That and some homemade marshmallows (better still Amy BK marshmallows :wink: )

Aw, shucks! Can't take credit for the marshmallow recipe - it is Alton Brown's and so darn easy. Make them once and you'll never go back to store-bought! Here is the recipe for the Inspired....

We have a small stockpile of Penzey's Hot Cocoa, the mint variety is equally good. I also like the Trader Joe's hot cocoa, but Penzey's is richer, smoother and a bit easier to come by.

We always have a bunch of egg whites left over from hollandaise-making at school. Amy's right - you'll never eat those rubbery, store-bought marshmallows again after having homemade, and Alton's recipe is the one I use, too.

For Christmas year before last I made them as gifts in plain, chocolate and peppermint!

I may take a lot of heat for posting this recipe, since it is literally so simple my dog could probably make it, but this is my favorite Hot Cocoa recipe. Thank you, Paula Deen!

Creamy Dreamy Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

* 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
* 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
* 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 6 1/2 cups hot water
* Mini Marshmallows (optional)

Directions

In a large saucepan, combine sweetened condensed milk, cocoa, vanilla and salt; mix well. Over medium heat, slowly stir in water; heat through, stirring occasionally. DO NOT BOIL. Top with marshmallows, if desired.

Tip: Chocolate can be stored in the refrigerator up to 5 days. Mix well and reheat before serving.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I guess I'll have to make a trip to Lotsa Pasta sometime soon. Wouldn't have guessed they'd have it there.

That cocoa powder is also sold at The Fresh Market as well.
I have to say..I'm a sucker for Abuelita cocoa. I just love the touch of Cinnamon.
