Rooibos

by Brian Curl » Fri Jan 01, 2010 8:24 pm

I just tried Rooibos tea a few months ago and have been drinking a lot of it ever since. I love the flavor, it's so smooth and earthy tasting to me. I first tried it at Quills in a latte. So I got the idea to heat milk and infuse it with Rooibos and add a teaspoon of sugar and I think it's delicious.

Any other Rooibos lovers out there? Serving suggestions? I tried it iced at Quills once also and it was good.

Lastly, I've bought it loose at Heine but it isn't cheap, $7.15 for 4 ounces, who else has it loose maybe at a better price? Suggestions appreciated...

COMMON NAMES

* Red Bush Tea
Rooibos

Red bush or rooibos is a plant that has little therapeutic value. Rooibos tea is not only appreciated by people for its excellent flavor, but also because the beverage does not have any unwanted effect on the body or mind. Normally, the dehydrated leaves and the fine stems are used as tea. Despite the popularity of the tea, earlier, there was some confusion over its name. However, this has been settled now and it has been agreed that henceforth the plant would be generally known as Aspalathus linearis. Occasionally, the rooibos plant is also called Borbonia pinifolia Marloth or Aspalathus contaminate.

This looks like the source I've found online that I might feel most comfortable with as far as reviews, price, and authentic African rooibios.

Still open to any suggestions or local retailers. I called Whole Foods and Heine has better pricing...

Brian,

There is a great tea shop over in Indiana ( Clarksville/HWY 131 area) that sells loose teas.

I'd bet she'd have it and better priced than Whole Foods.

Also, does Nuts & Stuff carry Teas?- you might want to call.

Unfortunately, Jewel's House of Teas closed in August. They may still have some stock to sell according to the web site. Nuts N Stuff does have it, I am not sure of the origin. Nuts N Stuff is closed for Vacation until Wednesday.

That's really sad- they were very nice people.

I think I may have had the best Rooibos Chai ever at La Vida Java in Westport Village.

Brian,

I have been shopping a place called "Teavana" for several years. Most of my shopping has been done at their retail shop in the Mall of America in Minneapolis but they do have an online shop at (what else)

http://www.teavana.com/

Try their Rooibos/Green Tea blend made with Rooibos Tropica and Jasmine Dragon Phoenix Pearls Green Tea. A very-very good blend.

A quick check of their website indicates an in stock selection of 19 Rooibos varieties. If you include all varieties (Green, Black ,Oolong, etc, etc) their selection is well over 100 varieties. Quality and freshness have always been top notch.

Brian,

Ref: Teavana which I mentioned in the previous post. They do have a retail shop at:

Kenwood Towne Center
7875 Montgomery Road
Cincinnati, OH 45236
Phone: (513) 791.3859

They also have a shop here in Oklahoma City (where I happen to be spending the first few glorious days of the new year). If you see something on their website I would be happy to pick it up for you and get it to you upon my return to the modern world.

Steve, thanks for the offer and I did check out the website. Their price is $36/pound for organic rooibos. The site I found and posted a link to is $15.11/pound for organic rooibos so I'm gonna try them first. Very good customer reviews on that site also. $15.11/pd seems like a great deal compared to every where I've seen it. Heine is $28/pd.

I think a pound would last me at least a year.

Big fan here. I spent about 10 days in South Africa a couple of summers ago. Every day I would get a cup once or twice a day at the Java Cafe in Stellenbosch. I need to find a good supplier as well, You can get it at Kroger, but not that great.

I've also spent some time in South Africa and loved the Rooibos tea. I brought back a few boxes of tea bags that were wonderful. Unfortunately all the tea bags I've tried here don't compare. I have however found loose leaf Rooibos tea at the Spice Merchant in Chenoweth (sp?) Square that is great with a great price.

I need to get over to the Spice merchant. I just found Intaba (Teas of Africa) Rooibos at ValueMarket. I like it.

Hi Everyone,
Nuts & Stuff has loose rooibos for about $9.25 a pound and they also have African honeybush tea also. They are authentic and from Africa (I've learned some rooibos is produced in other countries also).

I got some there. It's good and the best price I've found in town so far.

I love the spice merchant, but the freshest and best I have found is the Zen Teahouse...
