Uncooked flour tortillas

by Mary Anne » Wed Dec 30, 2009 4:31 pm

Anyone have any leads on where I might buy these locally? I have given up trying to make my own, too thin, too thick, too whatever, they just aren't right. I surely can take the pre-formed dough and make them...surely?

mary anne i am sorry your tortillas dont come out right. I too have problems getting them just right.....i think it has to do with the temp of the water and how much lard/shortening you use. i am so envious of my older relatives. They just throw it all together by heart and "feel" when the masa is right.....and poof! perfect tortillas......

after seeing your post i am more drawn to making some sugar tortillas...SOOOOOOO GOOD! have you ever had them?

Hi Becky, I am glad I am not alone, I am really feeling like a knuckle dragging moron. The ingredients are so simple but I am convinced there is some kind of voodoo that I just don't seem to have in my kitchen. I bought a tortilla press at the local taqueria for gosh sake. Unfortunately I don't have handy Hispanic relatives to teach me, and I've never seen anyone offer a class in how-to. Are the sugar tortillas as tricky to make?

i have never heard of a class either, and having the relatives doesnt help.... look at me..lol. the tortilla press is very handy, but pricey at some places. I roll mine out..jeez what a workout!

if you asked one of my aunts that, they would wave their hand in the air... pshaww... then poof! sweet... warm, sugar tortillas.

Seriously, they shouldnt be hard to make, because you are just adding sugar. They are softer and more bready than a regular tortilla. In Mexico, they are called gorditas... not to be confused with the gordita you get that is filled with meat and stuff.

oh man, i am becoming nostalgic. i used to wake up in mexico to awesome sugar tortillas hot off the comal with hot coffee....mmmmmmm

Sam's Club has that exact product listed on their website. I'm not sure if the local store has them or not.

Costco is carrying them - 44 to a pack for $6.99. They are so good! They had them briefly last summer and then they disappeared. I know the people around me thought I either had a seizure or an epiphany, as I rather loudly exclaimed "Oh My God, they're Back!" without realizing I had said it out loud. I bought several packages.

Amy,

Are they refrigerated, or with the rest of the breads? Thanks for the lead-I'm heading there tomorrow.

Deb, they are in the refrigerated cases, an aisle or two after the land of milk, butter and yogurt. They are at the top of the case. They freeze well. Oh - by the way, they've done a bunch of changing in the breads. Breads are now at the opposite end of the aisle from the floral display, by the pharmacy, just in case you're looking for them.
