Caraway Substitute?

by Beth K. » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:16 am

I have a pork and cabbage recipe that calls for caraway seed. I don't have any and I'm very much wanting to avoid a trip to the store. I don't think I've ever used caraway in anything before, so I don't know its flavor. Does anyone have any suggestions on something I could substitute? I was thinking about adding some celery seed. . .

Oh wait, I just realized: is caraway the seed that is in rye bread?

Yup that's it. And I can't think of a substitute for it. It's what gives rye bread a good deal of it 'ryeness'.

There is no subsitute as far as I know. But remember, in savory cooking a little goes a long way!

How about fenugreek seed, it will just give everything a lemony , cuminy, :D flavor!
I think it will make a great substitute.

I think fenugreek is a totally different flavor. That's the ingredient in curry powder that stands out the most. It reminds me of, well curry. Caraway has a more earthy, peppery and slight anise flavor.

That helps me understand. I don't like caraway or anise.
