Green Tomatoes .....

by Becky M » Sat Oct 17, 2009 6:52 pm

My husband went to the farmer's market today and brought home some really pretty green tomatoes.....

like i said.......GREEN tomatoes.....

i do not know what to do with them. My first thought is Fried Green Tomatoes, but i have never made them. I looked them up online and recipes call for different things. Flour/cornmeal breading, flour/cracker breading, canola oil, vegetable oil, even bacon grease. sigh...... i have absolutely no point of reference with this one.

any suggestions?

interesting annemarie. So you make a batter, not a coating. i had not seen that one in my recipe search. Does the batter slide off of the tomatoes? also, some of the recipes said to slice really thin, other thick. I am guessing it is a preference of how you like them.

i am thinking i will try the batter method. It sounds easier than the steps of coating and stuff. I like your "recipe" that is in your head. That is how i do most of my cooking! Nothing is ever the same twice.....now i do not know if that is a good or bad thing!

Thanks for the suggestion! i am bursting with happiness right now! Don't know why, just a really great, relaxing, beautiful day from the Lord. I made two awesome chicken pot pies, a really sweet cheesecake pudding dessert (personally i would have gone without the pudding, but the kids liked the sound of recipe), and i made a craigslist sale!

Sitting in my little kitchen, enjoying the evening and sounds of my family, and planning tomorrow's dinner. I am blessed....... :D :D :D

Good idea about the pat drying. I will have to do that when i make them. They sound really simple to make. I think i am going to make them after church, just as a little snack while my roast is cooking. I cook for a large family, so it is hard to make stuff that has to be eaten quickly. I know they should be eaten hot as they come out. Do they need a type of dipping sauce or something?

Food heaven here.....hmmm nice way of putting it. I really enjoy cooking and everything flowed today.

Weird about your buyer being from the same area as you....what are the chances huh? Feels nice when you meet someone from home huh?

whoa that is a whole lot of sauce for my 10 little tomatoes....lol... i will look for a recipe that has a smaller amount.

i soooo know what you mean about the food. I miss a lot of stuff from my home, but a big part is the food. It is just not the same anywhere else, and in a way i wouldnt want it to be.

After the garden cleaning, I have buckets and buckets of green tomatoes. I can chop and freeze some, I hope (good in chili) but I need ideas for the rest of them. Whatcha got?
