Jungle Jim's bounty -- menu planning now

by Dana McMahan » Tue Sep 08, 2009 8:36 am

We stopped in at Jungle Jim's last night on the way home from Michigan. And by stopped in I mean an hour and a half and $140. Now I need to actually plan some menu items for this week around the things we purchased. Would love dinner ideas that include of the following (sans meat).

in no particular order

Can of harissa
Jar of black beluga lentils
Purple and fingerling potatoes
Squid ink fettucine
Orecchiette
Honest-to-goodness fresh Italian buffalo mozzarella
More fresh mozzarella, made at Jungle Jim's
Amish butter
big wedge of double cream brie
Rose water
Liquid smoke
Grapeseed oil
Cheese curds (we're thinking poutine)
Udon noodles
German spaetzle noodles
Black pepper jelly

Love this place - we're thinking of making it a monthly expedition and allowing a good 3 hours or so while there.

Dana,

I find the epicurious site to be great for when I've bought/found ingredients and I'm looking for recipe ideas for them. You just specify the ingredient and it'll search for all recipes using it.

i love fresh mozzarella so much! you could make a caprese salad. slice up the cheese and put it together with some good tomatoes and basil then drizzle it with olive oil and sprinkle on some salt and pepper. of course, that's not very creative but it sounds good to me.

i re-read your list and saw that you also had some brie. i like the way ramsi's serves their brie appetizer. it has a crust on it made of some kind of crushed nuts (i believe) and it's served warm with honey drizzled over it and crackers for schmearing. yum :)

the irish rover's brie is also delicious. it's served warm as well with a fruit compote or jam on the side which is interesting because it's not very sweet at all. the buttery richness of the brie goes well with the fruit. there may or may not be nuts. i can't remember exactly, it's been almost a year since i've been.

have fun with all those interesting ingredients!

Could mix this all together and create a giant Greco-Roman pasta dish to serve the multitudes.

So far I made a black-and-white pasta (scallops with the squid ink fettucine) and devoured the brie with apples in panini. The buffalo mozzarella we had with the Orecchiette with tomatoes and pesto. yum!
Haven't attempted the poutine yet ;)
