Gelatin Sheets

by Carolyne Davis » Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:39 am

Does anyone know if there is some place locally that sells sheets of gelatin? Or, has anyone tried making gelatin sheets? Leah, how about you? Do you ever use gelatin for bows or flowers? I have to make a cake for a friend's 40th birthday that looks like a Chanel handbag. It's going to sit on a mirror and there will be a "botle of N05" and "lipstick". I thought that the gelatin would help give the fondant a look of "glass" for the perfume bottle. Waddya think?

But they don't taste very good.

Last time I was at Creation Gardens in the back room there was a half empty box of gelatine sheets. I wonder if this means they sell them by the piece. You might call and ask.
No idea on the thread count.

I called Creation and they still have gelatin sheets! Great idea Gary! However, not one person working there knew the thread count. No matching shams either.....

Well, Creation Garden was a bust. They have the gelatin sheets, but you have to buy an entire box and that costs $40. I only need a few sheets. Anyone out there use them in their business? Would you sell me a few??? Thanks!

I have never seen gelatin sheets in a local store. However, plain unflavored gelatin is at Krogers, etc. I think is the same product in a different form. I don't know how to translate the amount to a sheet. Probably someone on here can tell you are a goggle might.

Steve,
There are recipes for making "sheets" using powdered gelatin, but the end result is rather flexible and used to make flowers or bows for cake decorations. I am attempting to make an edible (if you want to eat a gelatin sheet, ugh) perfume bottle as a cake decoration. A friend is turning the big 40 and her hubby has hired me to make her a cake that looks like a Chanel handbag. It's going to sit on a mirror (like would be on one's dressing table) and I thought a bottle of Chanel No5 would look good with it! I want it to be clear, therefore, the need for the gelatin sheets! LOL I think I found a place online to order them a few at a time, but I am worried that they 1. won't get here before I need them and 2. will be broken when they arrive....aaaarrrrggghhh!
I love a challenge!

Carolyne, I should have told you that gelatin sheets only come in a case at Creation Gardens, but was hoping you knew something I didn't about their policy having changed. I wanted gelatin sheets for the windows and doors of an elaborate gingerbread house I made a couple of Christmases ago, and had a helluva time finding less than a whole case. I finally glommed some from somebody (can't remember who), and they were a big disappointment. They are so fragile, and so brittle, they are nearly impossible to work with as construction materials. I finally ended up melting them down with some powdered gelatin and pouring my own "sheets" of glazing (quite a bit thicker than your standard gelatin sheet, and not nearly as transparent) to attach to the back of the wall with the windows and the doors in it. But even that didn't work very well, at least I don't think it would for constructing a 3-D perfume bottle - because the end result was flabby and jiggly and basically had no structural integrity of its own.

I hope you find a successful solution - if you solve this puzzle, I'll steal your idea for my next gingerbread glazing!

Carolyne, sorry CG didn't work out. As I said in my post there was an open package there one day- but I thought it was odd. Good luck.

Marsha,
I had thought that the end result might be a tad light to where I would have trouble even keeping it on the mirror, I had a few ideas on how to do that, but am not sure if any of it would work.
I think I 'll just go with a lipstick, Chanel pearls, and a hankie! I know I can make those out of fondant.
The next time you make a gingerbread house, try using Jolly Ranchers for the windows. Crush them up, trace the window shapes onto parchment, add a bit all around so they are a tad bigger than the opening, fill with crushed candy and microwave. Only takes a very short time, but when they harden back up, they make perfect, sturdy windows - colored of course, but the yellow makes it look like candleglow!
