where (what store) to find GOOD pita bread

by Ellen White » Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:30 pm

I would like to find some good pita bread at the store. Sorry, not Kangaroo pocket bread that they have at Kroger. You know the kind I mean-nice and soft, like you get in a restaurant. But at a regular, accessible store. Thanks.

Ellen i was thinking the exact thing the other day. I bought some of the Kangaroo type at Kroger. I put some chicken fajitas in there and it was sooo good. But, the pita was not as nice as the filling. It would be nice to know where to find some nice pita bread, but a regular store. Thanks for putting the question out there.....

I believe Al Watan bakery in Hikes Point sells fresh pitas.

I think my church is in that area. I could be very wrong though, not super familiar with Louisville. Is this anywhere near the Y on Six Mile Lane or Chili's ?

I second the recommendation for Al Watan. The pita is fresh, which makes all the difference - it's not a bread that "holds" well.

i tried going to their website. It seems to be down, or is it a different link now?

I can't "see" Al Watan in my head, but i know where the Canaan church is, so i think i can find it. Does anyone know their hours?

Do you think maybe Lotsa Pasta or Doll's or somewhere a little more on the beaten path?

Ellen,

I get my Kronos brand pocketless pita at Lotsa Pasta- I've used it for many years- in New Jersey that's the pita they use in diners. It's in the frozen section, so when I get some, I always buy two packages so I have one in my freezer for back-up.

Ellen,

We have always liked lavash instead of pita (similar, but lavash carries a little more flavor to compliment whatever you slather it with) unless you specifically need that harder texture to build a sandwich with. You can pick up lavash by the bag at the Holiday Manor Shiraz. It goes great with their hummous, too!

Baban Bakery on lower Brownsboro Rd., in the little strip of businesses that includes Blimpie's, is a great middle Eastern bakery. I pick up their pitas and lavash at Creation Garden when I'm downtown or out at the bakery when heading east. If I recall correctly, Shiraz and the bakery were housed in the same building for a while when Shiraz first came on the scene. Good bread!

Thanks, Amy! Baban, Baban, Baban! I racked my brain for that name! Funny, I only pass it everyday on the way to work.
