5 Minute Choclate Mug Cake?

by Brad Keeton » Tue Jun 02, 2009 3:57 pm

From my mother today. Any bakers on here know if this looks like it would turn out even remotely good/edible?

THE 5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE FOR ONE PERSON
Indgredients:
* 4 tablespoons flour
* 4 tablespoons sugar
* 2 tablespoons cocoa
* 1 egg
* 3 tablespoons milk
* 3 tablespoons oil
* 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
* A small splash of vanilla extract
* 1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.

The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.

EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

Yikes. Ingredients look okay, Brad, but I can't endorse baking a cake in a microwave unless you're in a bomb shelter trying to entertain your doom-mates.

On the other hand, who knows? Spend $5 and find out!

Yeah, that's what got me. Everything looked pretty normal until that point, but I suppose that's the only way to do it in 5 minutes.

If I get around to giving it a shot, I'll let you know. . .

I'd be a little concerned about the ceramics in the microwave for baking. Many mugs are okay for 1 minute heating water, but the glazing may crack if subjected to high microwave for 3 minutes.

Personally, I'd be more comfortable baking something like this in a cardboard container ( do they still sell microwave cake mixes) or the old fashioned-way in an oven. :D

My daughter (she's 19) and I were discussing just today children's birthdays.
I tried my very best to remember every one of her's. The very first one was a single serve microwave cake that was Duncan Hines. She loved it.
It came with sprinkles.

This was sent to me months ago by an aunt of mine that lives alone. I've never tried it but she thinks it's great. It's good for people that live alone when a big cake just gets stale before it's eaten. It's also pretty good for students with no oven , just a microwave.

My father sent this to my 11 year old daughter. She makes it, ALOT! It really is pretty tastey. (Sort of like a pudding/choc. chip cake) She likes to make things without me helping and this is easy. I, too, was concerned about the ceramic coffee mug so I have her use a glass/pyrex 2 cup measuring cup. It works well with no spillage. Sometimes, if she is feeling generous, she even shares it with her brother!

I made one of these chocolate mug cakes for my hubby tonight. He has a terminal sweet tooth! As for me, I'm not a big fan of cake in general and (gasp!) I don't care for chocolate. He said it was pretty good without being way too rich. I had a few bites and found it wasn't terrible tender, but passable for a "quick fix". My chocolate chips were in the freezer until the last second and that may have kept them from melting to resemble a Pudding Cake (a childhood favorite). All in all, I can see making one of these again in the future for my husband. But, since I'm not fond of cake or chocolate, it won't be one of my personal favorites.
