Have you ever eaten rose?

by Michael Barnett » Sat Mar 07, 2009 10:17 pm

I've heard alot of people online say that rose actually tastes pretty good. I was just kind of curious and was wondering where I can get some that is suitable for eating in Louisville. Also if you guys know any decent ways to prepare them (if there is any decent way outside of a raw salad) please share.

I have prepared salads with rose petals and they are quite delicious. They are tender and rich on the tongue, at least mine were. Make sure to use ones that are pesticide free. I used the ones I grew in my garden. They are also great as garnishes on desserts, in drinks and on bed pillows. :D

Craetion Gardens (sorry to sound like a broken record) has bags of different flowers, though I don't know that I have seen roses.

I've had them i salads and on cakes, and rosewater ice cream is very good.

Creation Garden does carry roses. You could probably get some at Whole Foods too. The have a section of edible flowers in their produce department.

Thanks guys. They are one of those foods I'd like to try. I still remember being shocked just by finding out they were edible. I can use this as an excuse to finally check out CG as well.

Saffrons has rosewater ice cream and I have had it a couple of times. I've never decided whether or not I like it, but it is different. ... Note ... That is the only thing that I am not sure of at Saffrons. Every thing else is great.

Quite edible if you haven't tried them.

I love that ice cream. Most people I've taken there either do not like it or give a response similar to yours.

They do have an interesting tannic nuance on the finish. I prefer to use sweetened rosewater in culinary applications. Of the edible flowers, though, I have always had a fondness for nasturtiums.

Oh yes, Stephen, I'm with you on the nasturtiums. :)

Mmm, this reminds me of rose pastilles ~ the little candy drops in a pretty tin. Such an elegant candy. I think rose water is incredible.

Rose hips are very high in Vit. C. I used to make rose petal jelly when I was in high school. Very fragrent and always a beautiful color.

Used to make small white mints and use fresh violets quickly brushed with hot sugar water for a garnish on top. sameshould hold true for rose petals. They retain shape and a vibrant color.

I've had rose, and it's not so much a "taste" as it is a "feel."

I found them to be very tasteless, but they added great color and texture to the meal.

On the topic of roses, you can also find rooh afza at the subzai Indian market, and probably a few other places around town.

Its a very sweet syrup with roses, screwpine, keora, some orange, and a lot of ingredients in a language that I'm not familiar with. It makes a mean cocktail mixer (used sparingly) and I've been meaning to try it with a chocolate liquer.

Traditionally, it's mixed with iced milk or water and consumed during celebrations at the end of Ramadan.
