green onion storage?

by John Hagan » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:56 am

Whats the best way you found to keep green onions in the fridge. The best way I found is to wrap them in pieces of paper towel and store in the crisper. This works ok, but they still get floppy in a couple days. I have also tried just putting the root ends in a shallow glass of water but this didnt get any better results. Any thoughts?
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Ugh. Don't you just hate that?

Green Onions are the one produce item that I actually get a plastic produce bag for from the grocery. My experience has been that if I replace them into the bag, twist it shut and place back into the crisper that I can make them last much longer. It's possible that this is just my refrigerator settings too. Good luck!

John,

Have you tried the "Green Produce " bags they sell at Pauls/Bed, Bath and Beyond/others? They are green produce- size bags that are perforated with tiny holes to let the ethelyne gas out , and keep your produce fresh MUCH longer. I've been using them for years, and HIGHLY recommend them. ( although the local local brand they used to carry at Paul's seems to have disappeared, and now all I can find is the "Debbie Meyers brand.) I love them so much that I should have put them on my list of "Favorite Gadgets" on that thread...I wouldn't get my CSA without them.

They come in packages of 20 bags for typically $10 , which seems high. But, 1) they really do extend the life of most vegetables and fruits by a long time ( Days to weeks) in your crisper and 2) they are reusable. When I've used what's inside, I just rinse them out, turn them inside out and stand them over a bottle. etc to dry. They last forever this way ( unless you ended with complete mush inside one and can't stand cleaning it out), so it's good for your pocketbook and the environment.

Here's a link ( but as I said they definitely carry them at two stores above and I'm sure many other places):

If you are going to be in the area, I'd be happy to give you one to try out too.

Yes, they were selling them at Beargrass too ( though her prices were high compared to Paul's).

Hope I didn't sound like a commercial  . But I really believe in these bags as a way to extend your food dollar and great produce...(Haven't tried them with tomatoes, though- those Never see the inside of my frig)

Dry paper towel will wick away moisture from your onions. Try damp paper towels.

I keep them in plastic, and they last several days.

One of the biggest problems with green onions is that they don't need to be misted in the produce coolers. But they are almost always on the top shelf right next to the sprayers. I tend to grab a bunch or two and shake them out real good. Kinda like I was cleaning a paint brush. I have gotten some strange looks from people for doing this. Then I put them in the plastic bag that the stores provide which I usually store them in and get a shelf life of up to two weeks most of the time.

I like how Rachael Ray suggests for the storing of herbs. Dry them if needed, wrap in paper towels, place in a plastic bag then store in the fridge. This method works very well for me.
Great food along with great company is truly one of lifes best treasures.
