Creative cooking without being able to use electric stove.

by Sarita C » Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:04 pm

Heya folks,

We are without power but the generator is pushing our furnace so we have heat. My husband gave me some "ground" rules.
No stove
No dishwasher
No dryer
No washer
No coffeepot

We have a little weber-q for tailgating/car camping, etc that has a griddle so breakfast is pretty easy.

Tonight I made grilled ham and cheese sandwiches on it which was very tasty.

I tried to use one of my chaffing dishes to warm up the tomato soup and it got slightly charred because I didnt use the steam portion of the dish. I'm thinking with some planning a small crockpot will work just fine.

Any ideas for my limited cooking surfaces for hot meals? This morning making egg sandwiches was pretty fun.
Yummy too.

Hope all is well (and warm)

Sarita,

When we were renovating our kitchen we set-up a small kitchen downstairs with a microwave, the crockpot and a single-coil burner ( looks just like to coil on an electronic stove-top, but it plugs in. ) You are very welcome to borrow the later for the duration if you'd like- it's really amazing what you can cook with a single burner if yu have to.

Heya Deb,

Thanks a bunch! We'll see how long this thing lasts (or my tolerance for it).

One burner would make a big difference. At least I could make coffee and heat up soup.

Best,

Thanks...that's very sweet of you to offer. I have 4 of varying degrees in sizes.
I've got a little dipper on the counter heating up some soup I made pre-lost power for the hubbie when he gets in.

PM me and I will trade borrowing your hotplate for a quart of my very special chili con queso (if you like chili con queso)

Best,
Sarita

P.S. I gotta say..I'm a transplant here and in times like these it really warms me to the soles of my shoes how generous folks can be.
Makes me proud to live here.

You could go buy a Coleman camp stove that runs on little propane bottles. They are pretty cheap about $30 or so and are also great to have for entertaining outdoors in the summer.

Heya Dan,

Deb loaned me a sweet one burner electric do-dad whosewhatsit. Heated soup that I made on Sunday up faster than our microwave will with power on.

We are still without power and running on a generator. Frustrating because everyone around our little neighborhood is with power.

But...we are warm and the generator is still functional.

Best to all and stay warm!

We sell butane stoves at Campbell's Gourmet Cottage. I am currently out of stock but they should be in on 2/4 or 2/5 if anyone needs one. I do have the butane canisters in stock at the moment if you already have your stove. Remember, shop and eat locally at the business you want to remain open!!!!
