Gas versus electric

by Amy Smalley » Thu Jan 08, 2009 2:22 pm

I am getting ready to start on a kitchen remodel and I'm replacing my electric stovetop and double ovens. I thought I'd want gas because I love to cook and that's what the chefs use. I hear though that satisfaction ratings on gas is lower than on electric so now I am second guessing. What do you all think? I would get a dual fuel with gas cooktop and electric oven. But I'm open to other suggestions.

I miss my gas stove every single day. I hate having to juggle pots and pans on and off elements in order to lower cooking temp. quickly. In the 4 years I've lived here I've had 3 elements burn out in the middle of a task- never happens with gas. With gas I can always tell when I've left a burner on- with electric in the middle temp range it isn't evident.
All that being said, I do like my electric oven- I use the oven so much more than I did the gas- but that has more to do with the ancient age of the gas oven I was using- I had to light the pilot every time I used it.

I love my gas range! Hated it when I had electric ones in past apartments.

I've cooked with electric and gas, and I will never ever switch back to electric again.

Given my druthers, and when I build my dream house it will have this, I will have a gas cooktop, and an electric oven. Just my humble opinion.

Seems that I have heard that gas ovens are not desirable for baking.

I had the opportunity to build my ( almost ) dream kitchen 6 years ago and that's exactly what I did. Gas cooktop ( 5 burner- GE Mongram, mega BTU), with electric convection oven.

If you can find the space/make the space, I HIGHLY recommend getting another double oven- it's amazing how much difference it makes, and once you've had one is horrible to go back to one oven ( I did for 5 years) . I also redid the layout to find a spot for a warming oven that I found marked down/Discontinued model at Bargain Supply ( $200!). Love that warming drawer- it gets alot of use.

Well, I'm sold on the gas range now. What are the pros to a convection oven? We have 2 ovens now. My husband has suggested that in the remodel we make one a convection oven. I've never cooked with one and not sure what makes it any different.

Defintely GAS cooktop!!! Like Deb, we built a new house 2 yrs ago and we were pretty much able to design our dream kitchen which is the center of our house. I got the 6 burner Dacor cooktop with mega BTU's and love it. I thought convection ovens were microwaves???? Then someone explained the concept of circulating air with convection. I got the double (love having double ovens!!) Dacor ovens with convection and I have used nothing but convection since. It cooks so evenly. Also, I at first thought the warming drawer was a bit frivolous but we use it all the time. I was surprised!!! Just enjoy your new kitchen.

Oh yes, gas cook top. I'm for the convection oven and the warming drawer, too. As long as you are running a line for the gas cook top, run a gas line for the outside grill. That sure beats hauling those LP tanks. I use the gas grill almost as much as the oven.

Just bought a dual fuel, 30 in, from Sears. Really does its job, haven't burnt anything since we bought it.

I'm totally with Bill on this one - gas cooktop, electric oven with optional convection.

My question on the convection oven is - are cooking times different? I seem to remember that perhaps the cooking time is less. I'm not sure I want to try to convert all my recipes if this is true.
