Latin Grocery (Annatto Seeds)?

by Michael Sell » Mon May 26, 2008 2:31 pm

Can anyone recommend the best (or kind-of best and closest to Germantown) grocery that I'm likely to find annatto seeds (for yellow rice) and anything else suitable for Latino cooking. Thanks much.

Michael, from Germantown, the closest is probably Santa Fe, 3000 S. Third St., 634-3722, where the excellent taqueria includes a small grocery.

For more comprehensive Latino groceries, head out Preston, still not too bad a trip from Germantown. One of the largest and most well-stocked is La Tropicana, 5215 Preston Highway, 964-5957. Others include La Favorita, 6201 Preston Highway, 964-2639, and La Tapatia, 8106 Preston Highway, 961-9153.

In the other direction, Lotsa Pasta has some Mexican spices, and so does Whole Foods. I don't know for sure about annatto, though.

Thanks all. It sure sounds like Preston Highway is the place to go. How late is Nuts 'n Stuff open on weekdays (since you posted)?
