Vanilla Bean

by Jessica Devine » Sun Dec 19, 2010 3:08 pm

Where can I find vanilla beans?

I'm wanting to flavor some frosting and have the little specks of vanilla.

In a previous thread, a paste was mentioned. Is that available currently and will it allow me to have the specks?

Nuts and Stuff has them for a good price. I'm not sure if they are open today if you are wanting them right away. Whole Foods also has the whole beans in stock, but they are significantly more.

Thanks, Madeline. Nuts and Stuff is right up the street--I'm going to need them tomorrow so hopefully they're open on Monday.

According to their website, they are open 10-6 tomorrow, but may want to give them a call first, 502-363-3338 to see if they are open and make sure they have some in stock seeing that this is the time of year everyone is baking like crazy!

Jessica:

I'm assuming you're going to be able to track down your vanilla beans on Monday. But, to answer your question about the vanilla paste, YES, it would give your frosting the flecks you're looking for. Don't know if it is available anywhere locally. I bought mine on-line.

Jessica,

Try calling the new Cooking Cottage at the Vogue in St. Matthews- I'd think they would have them and it's also local.

I know they carry them at the Liquor Barn in Springhurst along with the other Nielsen-Massey flavorings. They are expensive, but oh so good. They should have the same brand at Willliams-Sonoma but I don't recommend the mall this time of year.

I don't know, but am pretty sure that Lotsa Pasta would have them. On the other hand, if you live close to Nuts N Stuff, that sounds like the way to go!

I just realized that I'm no longer getting emails letting me know that you all responded to my post. So, I apologize for the delay in my response. I actually found the vanilla beans at Kroger on Goss. I've looked before, but the deli chef happened to be walking by and located them. FYI, Kroger also carried bourbon vanilla beans. The chef wasn't sure if that meant a boubon soaked bean or if that's a type of vanilla bean.
