Enameled cast iron at Aldi

by JohnS » Mon Dec 13, 2010 9:10 pm

Figured I'd toss this up here in the event anyone is looking for a relatively inexpensive gift for a foodie or a new pot or pan...

Aldi has several enameled cast iron pieces in their ad, beginning Wednesday the 15th - a 12" frying pan, an 11" grilling pan, a roasting pan, and 5qt braisers, dutch ovens, and casserole dishes all for $30 or less. Available in red or blue...

Lucky you Marsha! i saw them there as well and have checked them out, just wondered about their quality.

Has anyone used them yet, how do they hold up? What color did you get Marsha, i really liked the baby blue they have. I believe they had some red and orange.... but i was really feeling the blue.

I got the red ones, and haven't used them yet of course. I'll need some rubber-footed racks to use the roasting pan, because you don't want to use metal ones, they might chip the enamel. Just on a see-and-hold level, the quality looks great.

By the way, really nice big knobs for handles on the lids - recommended for 350 F and under, but that'll work perfect on the braiser.

Yes they do feel very heavy and i liked the knobs on them as well..... the red is very pretty. It seemed to be the one that was being bought the most.

Hmmmmm .... i might go get the blue ones..

The only one I didn't get was the grill pan, because John wanted the set to match, and there wasn't a red one. The other four came in at a sweet $100 total.

Becky, a new laptop is a great thing. You can get the pans before Valentine's day!

Becky, ALDI carries those pretty frequently, so I'm sure they'll be back around. I see them there every two to three months.

I have had Oval 5 quart dish (in UofL Red) for several months and I love it!!! I even bought my sister the same dish (in UofK Blue) for Xmas and she was ecstatic!! Just so happens a little birdy whispered in my brother in law's ear that I liked the stuff and I got the 5 quart braiser and iron skillet (in UofL Red) for Xmas also!! I feel a corned beef and cabbage dinner for New Year's Day....

Relatively speaking, I think this stuff is as fine quality as Le Creuset for the price. I've fixed many one dish meals in mine that have turned out awesome. Next, I'm buying the dutch oven. Wouldn't mind hearing if anyone else has good ideas for one pot wonders.....

My favorite one pot dish is the classic boeuf bourguignon, but can also make a pretty good chicken pot pie in the dutch oven. I reference a Tyler Florence recipe off FoodNetwork for the base and then top with premade pie dough, bake til brown and bubbly.
