Any Scandinavians?

by Lisa Stephenson » Sat Dec 11, 2010 10:51 am

Just wondered if anyone out there is a Swede, Norwegian, Fin etc. and what your holiday traditions are? My grandparents were Swedes (Swanson).
My favorites: Glogg (with Aquavit), Korv, Lingonberries (on everything...), peppekockar sp cookies?...the list is long

Not here...but I lived around a bunch of Finlanders in MN. Never quite got past the Lutefisk thing myself. Funny story...We were having a block party one year and I was slathering some chicken with BBQ Sauce and one of the neighbors (named Haapala if that tells ya anything) asked if the sauce was "spicy". I replied "no, it's just BBQ sauce"...to which she replied "Hey, your in Minnesota, we think ketchup is spicy" :P

Lisa, my heritage is Norwegian. Here is my recipe for Norwegian meatballs that I posted back in 2007:
http://forums.louisvillehotbytes.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2188&p=20312&hilit=Norwegian+meatballs#p20312

Norwegian meatballs are a year-round weakness. I have made some ro serve this evening for my grandchildren who are visiting ofr the weakend.

Additionally, I like lefse, fattigman, julekage, pickled herring, rollepolse, bruna bönor (brown beans), rutabaga and Ideal flatbrod. I beleive that Stephen D. will be making me a batch of rhubarb aqavit before the holidays.

I love strong Scandanavian style coffee and frequently order several pounds of "Viking Biking," a free trade coffee from Ingebretsen's in Minneapolis. http://www.ingebretsens.com/ I also order cheese and lefse from there.

God Jul!

Thanks for everyone's input! Now, that rhubarb aquavit is intriguing. Stephen, I hope I get to try your creation.....except.....lingonberry would be divine ! Hint Hint!
I hope to find the time to make some Swedish Christmas breads....ahhh.... the scent of cardamom..... Mmmm!
By the way, The Bodega (at Felice) on Market St now sells a bottled Glogg mix, Aquavit, and various vodkas.... recipe available at the store!!

God Jul.....Ya'll !

Lisa, if you can find any fresh or dried ligonberries, let me know. Cranberry was as close as I could come to ligonberry and . . . nah! By the way you might want to check out Vikingfjord vodka. I know it is made in Norway, not Sweden, but it is made from potatoes and pure glacial water. :D It is what Stephen has used for the basis of the aquavits using a recipe of the great Swedish/Ethopian chef, Marcus Samuelson.
