cooking on a salt block

by AmyBK » Wed Nov 24, 2010 12:59 pm

Does anyone have experience cooking with a salt block or slab? All the cooking and foodie catalogs have been featuring them for a while but I have never heard any reports if they really do "conduct heat beautifully and delicately impart a wonderful depth of flavor..." I would appreciate your comments. I'm looking for unusual but useful foodie gifts.

I've used them in restaurants- they are an interewsting fad IMHO. I would imagine they would be quickly relagated to the shelf with the hibachi etc.

If you want to try cooking that way, check TJMaxx / Marshalls / Home Goods before ordering from the catalogs - I have seen the small cooking slabs there several times. Might make the experiment a bit cheaper.

I have tried cedar planks before and have seen the pink salt blocks on Iron Chef, Food Network, etc...

I have never really been able to get the flavor out of these, come and go, cooking trends.
