Bulk honey

by JohnS » Tue Nov 16, 2010 12:11 am

Figured this was the best place to ask - anyone happen to know of a source of relatively inexpensive honey in large amounts? I recently got the brewing bug again, and want to re-make a mead I made long ago, but not sure where to start looking for the roughly 15 pounds of honey I'm gonna need. Any ideas or suggestions?

Dude,

Unless you are just really into Meade...give this recipe a try. It only calls for 2.5 pounds of honey and makes one awesome Lager.

There is a local beekeeping club that might be a good source. I'll contact my brother & see if he has 15 lbs to spare, he has about 4 hives in Oldham County.

Heh - most of it goes out as gifts when I make these things.

I use the horridly easy and extremely reliable Joe's Ancient Orange Mead recipe, but make it in 3 batches - a 3 gallon and two 1 gallon ones, with the honey at about 3# per gallon vs the recipe called for 3.5, and using different twists on the ingredients for each batch. Just a fun and easy way to keep the ol' homebrew skills somewhat alive.
