Best deal on cheese?

by Linda C » Tue Nov 09, 2010 2:55 pm

Hi folks. I'm making a large fondue for a party of 20, so I need to buy a lot of Gruyere and Emmenthaler. I want good cheese, but know it's really high. Where do you think I would get the best bargain for this type purchase? Thank you for any help.

Creation Gardens. They have a great price on some of the cheeses that we buy.

Thank you for your replies! Gary, I will pass on your govt. issue, thanks. I want mine to taste like the kind we've had (TOO) many times in Switzerland! (but it definitely makes you hike better)

Not just gov't cheese and not just old people. Whilst studying abroad in college, a group of us took a weenend ski trip to Switzerland. One of my classmates ate a large pot of fondue by herself, and she was, well, stopped up for a VERY long time.

True story....after a full day of hiking in the Val D'Anniviers, we stopped in the village of Zinal for a hefty fondue dinner. The owner/manager was a jolly Swiss man- however he refused to give us any water with our meal! He said "no, no, no it will ruin your digestion!" We could have WINE or BEER he said. We convinced him finally that we would drink BOTH but were needing water after the 8 hour hike. If you are doing uber hiking, you can digest the fat and work off the calories. Otherwise, I'm sure it could plug you up!!
