Michael's cake decorating classes.....

by Becky M » Thu Oct 14, 2010 1:34 pm

I am considering taking a cake decorating class. The only thing i could find was one that is offered at Michaels. $27, four classes in a four week period. They use a Wilton instruction booklet.

Any thoughts on this class.......... or any ideas on another class?

Also, i am not looking to go into making and selling cakes, just wanted to add a little more to my homemade decorating........

Becky,
You might call Bryant's Cake, Cookie and Chocolate at 7105 Fegenbush Lane in Lou (231-4453). I looked at some classes a couple of years ago but wasn't able to work it out. Leah may have taught some classes there or at least she shops there. Very nice people and a great resource for supplies. Give them a call and see if they are still doing classes. Hope to see you and your family at the offline in November.

The basic Wilton class will teach you how to make buttercream icing, how to smooth your icing, how to make roses, do star tip fill ins, and how to make your bags up. The first course is the basics. The latter courses teach you about royal sugar, pillars, fondant, etc.

They are decent classes for the beginner.

I saw a similar class though Hobby Lobby. I believe it was specifically for cupcakes. My mother and I have been thinking of doing something like this. Let us know how it goes.

Trisha - what you mentioned is exactly what i am looking for. Just something basic to start with. I do some little crude decorating on my "mom cakes" as i like to call them, but i think i want to step it up just a little bit.

Jessica - the classes at Hobby Lobby are full until after January. The ones at Michaels are $27, 4 weeks, not including supplies. The classes at Bryant's were $175 for 6 weeks, including materials. Bryants is also full until January, but way out of my price range. I am really eager to take the class, but the more i think about it i feel it would be a great thing to do with my two daughters. Just cant afford to do all three of us right now, so i might wait so we can all go together.

I took the basic three or four courses at Michael's 8 years ago. I then got online and found a few websites with forums for cake decorators and learned MUCH more than I ever got in class. I managed with only the training at Micheals and online information to be able to do pretty much whatever I wanted (with practice) for people, including 3D cakes.

Becky,

You might also want to consider on-line videos. There are many for free:

On the other hand, as the Mom of little ones, getting out of the house for a class and having some adult -time is well-worth the $27. :D
