Vintage Kitchenaid Mixer..... pic added!

by Becky M » Tue Oct 05, 2010 1:44 pm

I bought a vintage Kitchenaid on craigslist. The model is from around 1940's from what i have researched. But i am wondering if there is anyplace here that i can have it maintained. I took it apart to check it out and it was pretty dirty. I wiped it up the best i could but i know it has a way to go. I am not interested in shipping it anywhere, this thing weighs a ton!

Soooo Jealous!!!! I've always wanted one of those!

The Hobart place should be able to help you, but from what I've read, they aren't too horribly difficult to take apart and rebuild. There are several resources online on how to do this, but I'd suggest hopping over to the KitchenAid forums and seeing if anyone there can help... if a man named Kelly is still lurking around, he'll know how to find any part you may need. http://www.kitchenaidconversations.com

I am pretty happy that i found it and the price-------------- $15!!!!! it even comes with the original apple sauce attachment. I called the hobart place and spoke to someone who told me that the parts for this model, 3B, are no longer made. I told him it works perfectly but i feel it is sluggish, but he said the speed mechanisms are no longer made. He suggested to just keep using it as it because any servicing on it probably would not improve on its speed.

Edited to add:

I have always wanted a new Kitchenaid mixer, but i just cannot find one in my price range. They are sooo very expensive. My only dislike about this mixer is that the bowl is a bit small. I make large batches of some things and i have had to separate my mixture a couple of times.

Congrats on your find....I got my Kitchen Aid mixer the old fashioned way, we registered for it as a wedding gift and some of the family chipped in together and bought it for us.   Still running like new after 8 years! Mine gets considerable use for pizza dough, mashed potatoes, whipped cream and cookies! :D :D
Could you post a picture of your mixer as I'm curious to see what it looks like?

That's great that you got one as a gift. I have faith i will get the big Kitchenaid that i want, so i am just waiting patiently.... :D :D :D
I completely believe you that it is running like new after 8 years, i am estimating that mine is about 70 years old, but definitely at least 60 from the age of the lady i bought it from and her story, and it still works pretty well, like i said just feels a bit sluggish. The lady that i bought it from said it was her great-grandmothers and that she remembers her baking, making applesauce, and a number of other things with it. Personally, i would never get rid of something that had been in the family that long. But you know everyone has different views on things.

Just yesterday i picked up a Le Creuset that someone was selling on CL. She also said it was her great-grandmother's but just wanted to get rid of it. My price--------- $10!!!

I will post a picture of the mixer as soon as i can, someone at church just had a baby and i am cooking up a storm right now. (taking a break    )

Frankly, the old Kitchenaids are MUCH better made than the new ones. I have my mother's for the 50s I believe and two newish one that are a couple of years old. I mostly use a 20 quart Hobart for my baking and icing making, but sometimes need the little ones for small jobs.

and an old Le Crueset!! I really need to start checking CL more often!

I got my KA the other way...I pestered my mom for a few years and she finally got me one for Christmas. Had it about 6 years now and makes the best marshmellows ever! I've probably only used it twice in the past year...really need to change that!

Leah... The newer Artisans aren't as good as the old KA's because they have a lot of plastic parts inside them, but if you get one of the Pro's or an older HD they are all metal parts still and hold up much better. I have an all metal HD and it's a lot heavier than an Artisan and much, much louder. I know they've recently changed the HD casing, so I'm not sure if they are still all metal inside too...I quit researching the models once I brought mine home. Though I'm patiently waiting to see what they bring out to celebrate the 100 year anniversary in a few years.

If you want to know the age, call KA or post the serial number on their Facebook page...they can find it by the serial number...most are on a plate on the back of the machine.

Meh . . .I burned out three Pro 6 qt KAs inside of four months. KA always replaced them, but after the third one I just asked for my money back. There's a well-reported flaw in the slider thingie on the side.
