unwaxed lemons

by Jeff T » Sun Sep 19, 2010 10:48 pm

Does anyone know where to buy these? I am thinking that organic lemons would be unwaxed but I am not sure.

I've found if you wash them with Toluene the wax comes right off.

Thanks for the advice Gary. I am going to pick up some plutonium today so I guess I can add that to my list. Do you need any extra?

No but if they have any Uranium 235 at the Farmers Market, I could use a little to fertilize my tomatos

Does anybody have any REAL ideas where to buy them?

If you lived in LA or Florida all you need to do is park somewhere with your windows down a little and people will fill your car with them. Might be able to buy organic ones at Wholefoods but that wax is pretty universal and its candelila wax so its edible anyway.

Jeff, I don't know if this suggestion would help but wondered if dipping waxed lemons in very hot water might remove the wax that seems to be present on all lemons available in this area.

Candelilla wax, according to Wikipedia, has a melting point of 68.5–72.5 °C. If you submerge the lemons in water more than 160 degrees Fahrenheit, it should melt off. That is well below the boiling temperature of water (212 degrees Fahrenheit). BTW, tap water is frequently 120 degrees.

Wonder too if scrubbing the lemons with a brush might remove the wax as well.

Just a couple of ideas. Don't know if they're worth a hill of beans.

You might try this...http://www.veggie-wash.com/
I have also heard a mix of lemon juice and baking soda and water will do the job.

And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

I checked at both Whole Foods and Kroger. Both carried organic lemons, but neither advertised them as unwaxed.
