Fresh whole turkey

by Carla G » Sat Aug 28, 2010 10:11 am

Where can I get one for next week? Since it's not turkey season I was wondering if I needed to call ahead someplace or what.

Whole Foods often has fresh turkey parts ... not so sure about whole turkeys, but then, "Whole" is their first name. :D Might e worth giving them a call.

Since we're getting close to Thanksgiving, I thought I'd resurrect. I looked at Grasshoppers, and while I'm sure it's great, at $5/lb you're looking at $60+ for a 12lb. turkey. Anything good, local, but a little less pricey?

FWIW, I checked with Foxhollow Farms, and their turkeys range from $4.75/lb to $7.00/lb.

Am I naive for thinking these are very high prices?

Anything good, local, and somewhere between $0.69 and $5.00/lb anywhere? Something premium in say, the $2.00-$3.00/lb range?

Craigslist is a possibility. Found the following on 11/03/2010:

White turkey tom - $40 (Marion)

Date: 2010-10-31, 2:50PM EDT

White turkey that is very gental. About 30 pounds great for thanksgiving or a great pet. Also he was the grand chamion turkey at the 2010 Kentucky state fair. If you want him call 1-270-940-0261.

Butchered heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas - $50 (Pekin Indiana)

Butchered heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas - $50

We have a very limited supply of Free Range, Heritage, Eco-logically grown turkeys for Thanksgiving this year. These birds are a wondeful link between our agricultural and cullinary past with an equal ratio of dark to white meat and a flavor which you simply will not find in any sore bought bird. Period. Our birds are allowed free range all day and are only cooped at night. They are feed only with feed grown and milled by us or by a local miller using only non GMO components and no chemicals or hormones ever. We hatch and raise these birds from our own eco-logically grown breeding flock and we can voutch for the quality.

Most birds this season will be either of Naragansette, Bourban Red, Blue Slate, or Midget White heritage stock. Sizes run between 10 lbs and 20 lbs. All butchered birds are 50.00 each. All orders must be prepaid and arrangements must be made with us to pick up the bird the day of slaughter here at our farm in Pekin Indiana in order to meet Indiana Poultry laws. No birds will be delivered period!

We also have live toms available for those who wish to slaughter their own or use them for breeding stock. 25.00 each.

Get your order in quickly as these will be spoken for fast and the quantity is very limited. Orders can be placed by e-mailing bishops homegrown @gmail.com (no spaces in e-mail but craigslist won't allow me to post the correct e-mail) or calling us at:
Alan Bishop
812-967-2073

Calling and getting your order in and paid for quickly is the only sure way to ensure one of these beautiful and wonderful tasting birds can and will grace that special place on your family table come Thanksgiving. Experience what the pilgrims knew as a turkey this year and not the same old bland white turkey you buy at the store every season.

Just picked up our Turkey at Krogers tonight. 18 frozen pounds of Butterball goodness with less than 8% "solution" thrown in for good measure. Aside from a few marks from a whip (chain ?) and a bruise here and there from being kicked around it showed no signs of having been tortured any more (or any less) than a local free range bird...and at $1.69 a pound, I'll look the other way when it comes to Turkey abuse. 8)

I guess thats what surprises me about this issue. There are a good many folks on this forum who will not buy the cheapest bourbon, lowest price wine, cheap cigars and so on. When it comes to meat though,I get the impression that lowest price is one of the biggest factors helping their decisions. Im not saying that seven bucks a pound is cool for turkey, but anything less than a buck per pound seems like either a loss leader or an artificially low price. My point is this,if your able to appreciate the difference between a factory produced animal and one that has been raised responsibly, then you get what you pay for.
