Metric Conversion Help

by Bill P » Thu Jul 29, 2010 4:58 pm

I have a recipe that calls for 75 grams of Semolina flour. I'm used to measuring flour by the cup and none of the converters I've found online will do grams to cups (yeah, I know it is all about converting weight to volume). So how many cups of semolina = 75 grams?

Bill, that's just under 1/2 cup US. (.45 of a cup or 9/20 of a cup)

Bill, while Marsha is the go-to person for cheffy questions :) I'd like to jump in and encourage you to get that digital scale ASAP. It makes a huge difference, and more so with dry measure than wet, mainly because the conversion from weight to volume is more complicated with solids, which don't necessarily have the same specific gravity as water.

Get your scale, weight out 2.65 ounces of semolina, and you'll have a much closer equivalent. (And that's only about one-third of a cup, by the way, which illustrates my point about converting solids from weight to volume. 8)

So it is lighter than water?

PS: I didn't mean that to doubt you, Marsha, I was just surprised. And I still think Bill should get that digital scale. :)

Not necessarily "lighter", but surely less dense.
