Orris Root

Anyone know where I can find whole orris root, not powder, in Louisville?

Are you thinking of this place? If so, it's on Barrett Ave. About 3-4 doors down from Lynn's Paradise Cafe.

darn it, i'm all out, casting voo doo on certain people......
there is a place called magic herb shop, i can't remember if it's on baxter, frankfort ave.? they carry medicinal herbs, herbs for casting spells, candles, etc. you might want to see if they have it in non powder form.

I'm trying to make homemade pecan-coffee bitters. Most of the recipes I'm finding call for whole orris root.

Thanks for the lead.

i remember this place was near a hair salon or tattoo shop? i want to say somewhere across the street in the vicinity of cemetary. i can't remember. it was a small shop run by a women into magic spells, tarot reading, herbs, candles, and magic wands. this picture doesn't look to familiar to me.

annemarie,
I know the place you're talking about now. I actually own the building next door. They aren't there any longer. The address was 610 Baxter Ave. About a block down from Phoenix Hill Tavern (same side).....just down from Eastern Cemetary. I talked to the ladies that owned the shop a few times here & there. Nice people. Seemed to be a little out there. I had no idea what the shop actually sold. Honestly, I didn't pay much attention.

I'm having trouble recalling the name of the shop at the moment. I believe "Mystic" was involved. "Magical Mystic" or something like that. I'm guessing you could look up the tenants of 610 Baxter Ave., Unit #1, Louisville 40204 and figure it out. They've been gone from that location for about 5 or 6 years. But they could be at some other location.

I wonder if this place is the new store. Moon Struck sounds slightly familiar. But I just may be thinking of the Cher movie. http://moonstruckky.com/

I just spoke with a friend who works for Creation Gardens. And he said that he's almost positive that they do not have Orris Root on hand. He's worked there for years & knows the inventory inside & out. However, he said that they could probably get it. You would have to give them a call & they will order it. He guessed that it would take about a week to get it in. However if you're considering that route, I'd imagine you could probably just order it online yourself.

Yes. Several years ago a news story broke about Eastern Cemetary that bodies were either being double buried...or dug up illegally to make way for new bodies. I can't really remember the details, but apparently Eastern Cemetary had been badly mis-managed and neglected. When the story came to light, volunteers from the area started taking care of the plots. Headstones had fallen over etc. and people put them back up. Not sure if this still goes on today. You can probably google and find the news story. It seems like it was around 15 years ago. Eastern Cemetary is adjacent to Cave Hill. It's the one that's directly across from Phoenix Hill Tavern. I'm not sure which building you were in. I know the old Crematorium house/building that sits really close to Baxter Ave. (i.e. the front, left edge of the cemetary if you're facing it), was purchased by the guy that owns Spinnelli's 3-4 years ago. I think he may live there.

Looks like Orris Root is also "Iris Root" Get it? Orris/Iris...

Anyway, Orris Root is also known by these names:
Botanical Name: Iris germanica florentina
Common Names: Florentine or Florentina Iris, Queen Elizabeth Root

I'm thinking that you might be able to find it at good plant nursery.....still alive and with the flower still attached!

a shop that wiccan frequent to get their supplies. a friend that was into this, decided to take me there, and then give me a tour of the cemetery. wait i remember, it is one small cemetery that wasn't well maintained and had a lot of vandalism. had this huge building in the back that was totally in disrepair and you can tell people were drinking and spray painting all the walls. very depressing i might add. bardstown rd maybe?

Sounds like Eastern Cemetery on Baxter, close to Spinelli's.
