CF bulb fire????

by jpdurbin » Wed May 26, 2010 10:44 pm

I had an interesting event occur tonight. A CF bulb flaked out and started smoking. The place where the curly bulb portion connects to base was black. This is not the first time. Are they issued?

Technically CFLs are not supposed to be used upside down or in a closed fixture. The ballast in the plastic base needs a certain amount of air to work efficiently. The ballast generates the heat not the bulb itself. There is also the part about a bulb passing inspection but not always being able to perform once it leaves the factory. In short you are just getting some bad bulbs...it happens. You may want to try a big name brand and if any bulb goes bad in a year most places should back it up. CFLs are supposed to have a very long life so I would recommend you may want to take it back and explain to the store you bought it from how long it lasted and let them contact the manufacturer for a proper answer. Good Luck.
