Attempting to make bagels...

by Allison Williams » Tue May 04, 2010 7:00 pm

I am going to attempt to make bagels for the first time and from some of the recipes I have found it seems quite simple. I thought it would be a fun thing for me and my kiddos to make in the kitchen together. Are they that simple to make? If anyone has any great healthy whole grain recipes and advice I would greatly appreciate it! :D

All that boiling and then baking always seemed like a lot of work to me.
However, if you create a real bagel please think about going commercial. I broke down and bought one today knowing that disappointment was in the offing. Alas, I was correct.
The best of luck, Allison

I have found it fairly simple. Have you ever heard of the book "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day"? I love this method, and have made bagels from their recipe(s). The website is: http://www.artisanbreadinfive.com/ - search for their recipe.

Allison,
I've lived in both Chicago and New Jersey, and I've made bagels I thought were good from the www.kingarthurflour.com site. The recipe is called Mini bagels, but I made them regular size and baked somewhat longer. If you need some barley
malt, please Pm me- I have plenty to share.

Haven't done whole grain/wheat flour yet- if you find a good recipe will you let us know?

The book "Artisan bread in 5 mins" is fantastic ( and I've made bread for years). Highly recommend! Thanks for the suggestion- I'll have to try that recipe too.
