Can you help spice up this taco dip?

by Adam Smith » Tue Apr 27, 2010 6:22 pm

So my mother had this recipe for taco dip which I use quite a bit, and it's good but it's kinda boring IMO. Here's the basic ingredients as I recall off the top of my head...

ground beef
cream cheese
sour cream
taco seasoning mix
canned salsa
cheddar and jack cheese
canned black olives

...I was thinking I'd use some chorizo, mexican cheeses, refried beans, jalepenos or another spicy pepper, etc etc to make it better and spicier and just more exciting. I would do a few trial and error runs but I really don't have the time since I'm working a lot between now and Derby. If anyone has some ideas or even a tried and true recipe please let me know!

The chorizo is an excellent idea. Maybe throw in some cilantro, lime juice, and/or chipotle.

I'd go with some very, very finely diced habaneros. Really finely diced. And not much of it. But I love heat.

Good ideas, I think if I went with just a little seeded finely diced habanero that would be great. Anyone know which Mexican cheeses I should go with? Something to sprinkle on top and melt. Queso blanco?

Me too, but for the crowd, simply add Louisianna Hot Sauce. It will bring acid and gentle heat to the party...

This will sound funny, but...

Take some tortilla chips, grind them fine and sprinkle them across the top. Then place in the broiler.

Think about it, ya just took nachoes and turned them inside out!

Maybe add a bit of cumino/cumin.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

If this is the layered dip, then I would add a layer of guacamole and some ranch dressing to boot!
If you want a little heat, add a generous squirt of Sriracha Sauce. It has a mild heat and a little sweetness that goes well with anything. :D

I like the idea of guacamole but I'd put it on the side

Also a real quick spicy simple salsa recipe below that is far better than canned.
Adjust to taste

Crushed tomatoes
Roasted peeled chopped green chili's (you can use canned but drain them and then omit the lime)
Chopped cilantro
Chopped fresh jalepenos
Splash of lime juice
Kosher salt
Crushed black pepper

I like using it because it's good and spicy but doesn't have the heartburn backfire for folks with aversions to onions or garlic.
