Low Cholestrol Diet change

by Alan H » Sat Apr 24, 2010 11:04 pm

Been a major life style change in the past several weeks, grocery shopping has took on a whole new meaning.
Family doctor gave me a copy of " The Fat Book " by Karen Bellerson, really informative.

My cholestrol is high, not super high and I am exercising more, questions I have are other than the internet is there any recommended cook books ?, and also anybody with any other remedies ?

Thanks for any advice

Alan,

Besides avoiding the bad stuff ( egg yolks, bacon, animal fats, etc), you want Fiber, fiber, fiber. Aim for the high fiber/whole grain breads/pastas etc- there are actually alot of very tasty options nowadays. I bake, but I love the FiberOne brand muffin mixes- I just add a brown banana ( in lieu of some water) or some chopped apple to the mix, and then about a T of Flaxseed to increase the fiber. They taste great.

Other hint is to keep flaxseed on hand ( in your freezer- it spoils rapidly) and add some to things that you are baking/eating. I add it to quick breads and yogurts to give extra fiber; you can sprinkle it on a alot of things with out much taste difference.

Good luck!

Regarding flax seed: You can buy a 1lb bag of it in the health food section for under $5. I toast it in the oven (not even salted) and eat it by the spoonful - delicious and loaded with nutrition. It may seem a little strange, but it's good for my health and as tasty as any other seed or nut. Very flexible ingredient in just about any recipe, too. I'm very pro flax seed.

You know, call me old school, but I still think that balanced diets are healthiest. Any time you exclude a food group (sugar is not a food group) from your diet, you're bound to risk malnutrition and cause yourself more harm than good. Calorie counting, healthy diet and exercise are the winning combo. I just can't support anything else.

Kimmie is right ... your brain and also most mammal brains are loaded with Cholesterol (See the picture above), may not be the best idea to cut all of it out of your diet. You probably don't want to have the healthiest heart in the memory impaired ward or get a dead liver due to the statins blocking regeneration. I haven't seen any studies on the long term effects of statins and an extremely low level of Cholesterol, probably because there is no money in it. Whereas there's lots of dough in moving the "normal" range of Cholesterol in the blood lower, so you can sell more people expensive to buy and super cheap to make statins.
