A convenience food I am happy with!

by MichelleS » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:49 am

I've been told for years that the refrigerated Pillsbury pie crusts were good, but I generally shun convenience foods.

BUT...I can't make a decent pie crust to save my life, and I adore pie.

I finally tried them last night, and I am sold. They make a darn good pie crust. Give it a try if you haven't before.

I read about the Pillsbury Thin Crust Pizza dough on chowhound, and I uaually keep at least two of them in the 'fridge.

A friend of mine told me about "pizza rolls" from Old Chicago (I think), and the Pillsbury dough works beautifully for those, too.

I don't do pies. However, I will eat them. Sandy keeps a couple of Kroger brand pie crusts in the freezer and as a consumer, I am quite satisfied.

I like the pie crusts also. I use them for pies, sweet and savory. But, i do NOT like the pizza dough. It tastes like.......ummm.... refrigerated pizza dough.... lol My family just does not like the flavor. Now, i made some packaged pizza dough, and that tasted very good. I made two different brands and we loved one... stupid me, i forgot which brand it was on the pizza we liked...

My favorite convenience food would be the canned, seasoned greens. Still full of all their good stuff, without having to cook them all day. My grandmother stopped buying her greens fresh, and started buying the cans. We also got my 6 year old niece hooked on them. She'll eat an entire can by herself.

I haven't liked the pizza crust either, Becky. I think that most Pillsbury stuff tastes the same and the biggest reason I didn't want to try the pie crust was because I was afraid my pie would taste like nasty crescent rolls.

I haven't tried the thin crust though. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Michelle, someone just this week told me that they really liked canned greens too. I think I'll pick up a can at the grocery.

Michelle,

I'm a very good baker ( if I say so myself  ). But I've used those Pillsbury pie crust almost exclusively for many years. They are really excellent, handle extremely well and they freeze perfectly so you can always have them on hand. I've been embarassed several times when folks have asked for my pie crust recipe- I just write on an index card : "Buy Poppin Fresh Pie Crust...".

I like using thaw and use filo dough too. And if I can use it, it's got to be easy.

My favorite brand is Margaret Holmes, but Glory brand will do in a pinch. Just make sure you get the canned SEASONED greens. They also make a great canned green beans and potatoes. Yes, they ARE really good!

my favorite convenience food is definitely low-sodium boxed stock. you can flip the little top closed and keep it in the fridge for sauces, gravy, casseroles, etc. kroger brand is cheap (usually on sale) and just as good.

i thought of another one. stouffer's lasagna. i know some of you might be out there saying i'm silly for getting a frozen lasagna instead of going the homemade route, but it's worth it for the money (it feeds two at my house dinner one day and lunch the next) and time and effort saved. stouffer's lasagna is delicious and we love it at my house!

Absolutely nothing wrong with Stouffer's lasagna. I know I don't have the time to make lasagna from scratch during the week, and you can't make a real lasagna for what a Stouffers one costs. I've seen Kroger have them on sale for $6-$7.
