What's your favorite spicy mustard?

by Adam Smith » Sat Apr 24, 2010 2:16 pm

I've been a Grey Poupon and Mister Mustard guy for years, looking to maybe broaden my horizons. Really, right now all I have is yellow mustard and I'm looking for the best spicy mustard I can run and get from Kroger to put on this awesome pastrami my mom just brought me!

In the course of putting together my little condiment "blog", I've probably tried a couple of dozen spicy mustards. Hands DOWN the best I've tried is Dick's Horseradish Mustard.

http://cheesehouse.com/horseradishmustard.aspx

A couple of mustards that I would NOT recommend:

Plochman's Spicy Brown Kosciusko Mustard

Any of the Sierra Nevada branded Mustard (Porter, Pale Ale, etc)

New to the local market is Scruffy Man's Mustard from Weikel Foods. Ken did an awesome job on it. Spicy with cayenne. Lucky for us, he is a neighbor and fellow church member. Got a hellava bite to it. Yum! :P

Strangely enough, Emeril's is pretty good.

Maille Moutarde à l'Ancienne (old style mustard). I would also highly recommend their cornichons (gerkins) & red wine vinegar w/ raspberry juice (great for making dressing). You can find them in several local stores. I think my wife usually picks them up at Liquor Barn (if I'm not mistaken).

Bingo. That takes us to the mother lode.

Just to prove I'm not entirely a food snob, though, Gulden's Spicy Brown is actually pretty cheap, and the price is right.

I'm also a big fan of Zatarain's (Louisiana), which I think I saw someone mention above, but my usual source, Lotsa Pasta, has been out of it the last few times I looked.

Zatarain's is back at Lotsa, although only in a smallish (5.25oz) jar, about $2.39 as I recall.

I went with Gulden's spicy brown mustard and it's very good. I just went to Lotsa on Wednesday and forgot to look for the Zatarain's, I'll get it next time!

By the way: Homemade, care package from out of town, or bought locally? I'm always up for some good pastrami, but I can't think of a lot of sources around town. Stevens & Stevens comes to mind ...

For some serious heat, mix some dry Coleman's Mustard powder with a little beer! Delish. BTW....

I'm not a locavore fundamentalist, sir. I am a liberation-locavore with a preferential option for the local, but only when it makes sense. :D
