ernesto's dutchmans closed

by Ellen White » Mon Feb 01, 2010 9:20 pm

Tried to go to Ernesto's on Dutchmans Lane today, but there was a sign on the door that said they were moving to a new location. Does anyone know when or where? And is this closure recent? I haven't been there for a while, so I don't know how long it has been closed.

It wasn't a chain that was there. It was called Oldenberg, and it was a Louisville Original..That said, when places close, you reap what sew. Can't say I am shocked.

Oldenberg may have been a member of LO but was definitely a chain. The original opened in Ft. Mitchell, KY in '88 or '89. The second location was next to Joe Balogna's in Lexington and called The Holy Grail (named after one of their beers, Holy Grail Nut Brown Ale). There was also the Louisville branch, one in Florida, one in Georgia. The FL branch was, if memory serves, still open when the Louisville branch closed.

The name was purchased by a group of local investors that also operated the Silver Creek Brewing Co. in Sellersburg, IN, they were the second brewers of the line of Tucker Brewing Company beers. When Silver Creek closed the brewing equipment was installed in NABC's original garage brewery in 2002.

So, Ft Mitchell, Lexington, Louisville, Sellersbug, IN, Florida and Georgia. 6 locations, 4 states. Is that a chain?

If that's the case, I define it as a "chain".

Back to the matter at hand...

I noticed the Ernesto's on Shelbyville Rd vacating their old spot and taking the old Buckhead location. There is a new Mexican place in its place.

Kyle, my friend, that's rather old news....been to the new place a couple of time, and still prefer El Torasco on La Grange road for quality and quantity.....however, I will give them credit, they have updated and remodeled as was needed for that old "Cork & Cleaver" location.

I always had a dislike for Ernesto's, never thought the food or service was anything to write home about. However, I went there last March to watch some NCAA tourney games and fell in love with their Carnitas platter. Now I guess I'll have to go to the other location if I get that craving again.

Here's hoping they put something good in its place on Dutchmans.

Kyle, my friend, that's rather old news

Not to me it wasn't, I just found out about it the other day Bill. I never make it out to that end of town any more and just noticed it. So,for me, it really was not old news.

2 of my best friends and I go to to Ernestos about every other month (always Sunday - yesss). I was there two weeks ago, so the doors were definitely not closed then. Do we know where they're going? This is very important to me. I love the Xichotle (sp?) soup - get it every time, and the dark salsa, occasionally with a bloody mary that isn't awful for a chain Mexican restaurant. MAY have emptied their supplies recently...

And yes, Oldenburg was a chain (and it's closure predated the conception of LO). Nice wrap about story, David, about the old equipment. I'll have to tell my BIL who worked at both BBC and OB, currently residing in Indy, grew up in NA, and now an NABC fan (at least that's what he said at the Winterfest this past weekend!). My fave was the 15B, but you already knew that :-).

I believe the new restaurant is El Toro, which is their 2nd location. The original is next to Shoe Carnival on S Hurstbourne Ln.

I drove past last night and noticed some construction going on in/at the former Ernesto's. Any info as to what is going in?

I spoke to the operations manager of Tilted Kilt at the NRA Show and asked about the new Louisville location that I thought was going to be on Hurstbourne at the old Harper's/Amerigo building.
He told me that the Dutchman's location was much cheaper, better suited for the concept, and had better "demographics" for the brand in that area. They do have their own beer but it is basically a little "classier"(I use that term lightly) version of Hooter's. The menu is a little more "upscale" but still falls into that "fast casual" segment.
They are looking for FOH/BOH Managers with high volume experience. As far as I know they haven't started looking locally yet, but he asked me if I knew any one looking for a job that may be interested. I have his contact info. If anyone is interested you can PM me.
