732 Social

Ok, I don't post here often, but when I do, its for a good reason. I want to make sure that Chef Jayson and his staff at 732 Social get all of the credit they deserve. A party of four of us dined there on Saturday night and were blown away with what we experienced. We arrived early, and because I had read about someone else dining at the "kitchen table," I asked if it were available. We were seated at the table facing into the kitchen. We were treated to attentive service all night, from the servers, the bartenders, the kitchen staff, and Chef Jayson himself.

We were treated to incredible cocktails, including the William Schmitt Manhattan and the Ramos Gin Fizz. The drink menu is rounded off with a very nice selection of wines and craft beers. All the more impressive was the highly skilled and knowledgeable bartending staff.

Our dinner included the Cast Iron Mussels with Garlic, Fennel and White Wine, the Corn Soup with Toasted Pumpkin Seeds and Preserved Corn Salad, the Mac-n-Cheese Cavatapi, Bechamel & Rock Shrimp, and the Braised Short Rib with Root Vegetables and Roasted Marrow Bone.

All of the dishes were top notch, prepared impecably with the best ingredients. After speaking with Chef Jayson, we learned that his interpretation of "farm to table" includes using the best of local ingredients (including chickens and cows that are raised and fed specifically for the restaurant), and seafood that is specifically selected from the best sources. I have honestly never seen or tasted mussels that large and that succulent. The building itself is a wonder, completely green in its energy use and reuse of salvaged wood and other materials.

Our evening was finished with a wonderful treat as Chef Jayson provided us with a tour of the building as he proudly walked us around the building explaining with pride how the building was refurbished and turned "green".

Thank you to Chef Jayson and the rest of the staff. 732 Social has something special for the city of Louisville.

I'd recommend. We've been twice, and both experiences were excellent. Once was on a slow night, so we got to chat with one of the bartenders while watching our food being prepared. The second, it was slammed, with stuff happening everywhere, and we had a blast.

Was the noise a problem for you? We went, and I loved the food - gave 'em a good review - but the place was slammed, and we were disappointed because we went with a good friend and planned on an evening of good food, drink and conversation, and ended up enjoying good food and drink but yelling in an effort to be heard.

I've heard that some acoustic improvements were planned, and wonder if that happened.

I have been once and the place was packed and loud. The loudness didn't lessen our experience, we just talked louder. The food was awesome and the drinks are very interesting. We sat at the bar while waiting on our table and watched the kitchen work, very impressive. The bartender also did an excellent presentation making our drinks. Every drink was made right in front of the person ordering it with a detailed explanation of what liquors were being used and why.

Your mileage may vary, Justin. Everyone's does. But given that we had gone with conversation in mind, the extreme noise level on this occasion did not improve the experience for us. I heard they've improved it. I hope they did. I don't really mind a noisy place, either - heck, I praised Cafe Lou Lou in full recognition that it's a noisy place. But "just talked louder"? Of course. And everyone does that, and the decibel level rises.

It is loud, no doubt about it. I think the same thing of Mojito and Simply Thai everytime I'm there. The smaller places have a hard time controlling noise, but I'll take a louder restaurant over one I feel like I have to whisper in anyday.

It was loud the second time, but we were starting a night out on the town, and so enjoyed the environment. It's certainly not a place for intimate conversation, but it provides something that restaurants in bigger cities do, but Louisville largely does not - a fine meal and tasty drinks in a "party" environment. Even though we weren't conversing with our fellow patrons, we sort of felt that it was one big party in the restaurant. It's not what we're looking for every time we dine out, but is nice on occasion, especially if it's the start of a night out.

Okay, Brad, well argued. On another night with another group, I might well have felt the same way.

Part of the deal with the noise is because they are busy! That is a great testament to jayson and the staff. The bartenders really know what they are doing and share the same passion for mixology that frequent poster Stephen Dennison does.
So everyone knows the menu changes monthly so check the website. If there is a style of cooking you would like to see, mention it to Jayson and he will probably incorporate it. IMO this restaurant is one of if not the hotest places in town. It is fast paced, excellent foods, drink and service in a fun and casual atomosphere. In my travels to Chicago and New York it seems that Jayson's staff mirrors the current trends in the big cities.

Just so everyone knows - I don't work for 732 Social. I am a vendor and a friend of Jayson's on Facebook, but I have posted enough times for people to know I am not blowing smoke here.
