Chez Louis le Francais

by Charles W. » Tue Jul 14, 2009 4:23 pm

"An upscale restaurant featuring French cuisine is planned in the St. Matthews building on Wallace Avenue long occupied by Karem's Deli.

"Louis Retailleau, who lives in New Albany, Ind., and has been the chef at restaurants he has operated in Chicago and in Crown Point, Ind., plans to open a restaurant called Chez Louis Le Francais at 310 Wallace Ave.--near the intersection of Lexington and Shelbyville roads and Frankfort Avenue."

Eager to know more about it, but that's a mighty small space for an "upscale" restaurant. Although it could be argued that its nearest restaurant neighbor, Simply Thai, is also a mighty small space for an upscale restaurant ...

I had the same initial concern as Robin regarding space. Nonetheless, the Alliance Francaise is moving to St Matthews off of Sears Ave in the next month or so. The Alliance crowd will welcome this news and I'm sure will send customers their way.....In any event it is a Happy Bastille Day indeed.

Another point to consider is that a lot of the very nice restaurants in France are very small. Many only have six or eight tables and of course in France you only get one seating per table because they start eating late and take forever to complete a meal. The size of this building will fit that mold nicely.

Maybe now things will "cheer up" around there a little bit. If the vacant eyesores across the street get filled it would be a happenin' place!

Sounds exciting, but I'm not sure the restaurant name could be any more stereotypical*. . .

* Yes, I realize the chef/owner's first name is Louis. It's the "le Francais" part. Chez Retailleau wouldn't be bad, but I'm guessing that might cause some pronunciation problems for a lot of Louisvillians.

When I first moved here I asked some of my neighbors the best way to get to Versailles,KY. they had no idea what I was talking about. Now I know the correct pronunciation.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Ha! I did that same thing when I showed up in Lexington for Grad school!! It took this boy from Chicago about a month to learn how to order food from a drive thru so all involved could understand each other!

Cheers,

This is, indeed, good news. Our favorite Thai, and now a French restaurant - and Asahi and Graeter's and Lou Lou all within walking - or stumbling distance... Wow.

I've wondered a long time why Simply Thai - or the Cafe in the party store or now Chez Louis - have not moved into the old Bazo's. I've heard, uh, 'things,' about the management of the building. Maybe they're true.

Great news for the hood! I hope it's more Bistro style and not as formal as Le Relais (though I love them)

As far as Wallace Ave, what gives? I've also heard about some "difficult" people over there and what a shame. I remember when Blooms began serving lunch and they had to move people across the street for parking, even though there are never enough customers to fill that parking lot with just 3 stores.

As an "outsider" my guess is it rhymes with Soupy Sales, no?
