VT's Bubble Cup

by Paul Mick » Wed Feb 11, 2009 12:27 am

I couldn't help but notice the sign on my way down Bardstown Road, and I was thoroughly intrigued. I couldn't see if they were open for business yet.

Its located near the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen that's closest to Baxter. I'm thinking it might be a bubble tea shop, but I'm honestly not sure. Does anyone have any details?

It is so odd that this gets mentioned- I was describing Bubble Tea to a friend last nite and she didn't believe me.
I can't stand the stuff myself, but I will definately but her one.

I saw bubble tea all over Miami when I was there a few years ago and I found the concept quite puzzling. I didn't try any then, but I'm looking forward to trying it when VT's Bubble Cup opens.

Bubble Tea has been around Louisville for a while, but you've had to look for it. Coco's Bakery, as noted, has it, and so did its predecessor in the same location. TaiPei in the Fourth Street Live food court has it in season. I wrote a piece about it for LEO a couple of years ago.

That said, it has been a minor presence, more of a little "cult" secret for a few admirers than anything resembling a trend. I think it's cool, and I'm still charmed by a friend's description of her then 2-year-old granddaughter discovering the tapioca bubbles at an eatery in Memphis, where it's a little more widely available than here.

Here's my bubble tea piece (about TaiPei) from July 5, 2006. Page down past the beer brown cow to find it. :)

In the fall 2008 issue of "Food & Dining" magazine I wrote an article about bubble tea. It gives little background on the drink and tells you how to master the drink at home. It's a little weird, but its popularity is growing.

I am a big fan of Bubble Tea. In other cities I see a whole myriad of flavors but I usually stick to Green Tea or Milk Tea. Robin, thanks for the tip on Taipai. I work downtown and will hit it during the spring/summer season for a quick fix. The other thing is that I tried to google Coco's and I got the website of a chain. Google shows a Coco's location on Southside Dr. Is this the Coco's you are referring to?

I noticed it today, too. It has a really bold sign. I was going too fast in traffic to even gather a superficial impression of it, but it was defininitely noticable. Really, you can't miss it.

I have just tried the place. This was the first time I had ever tried bubble tea and I thought it was really good. There was a wide variety of flavors (green and black tea, chocolate and vanilla, various fruit flavors, and some other stuff). They also have regular teas, smoothies, coffee, and milkshakes. You can also purchase a piece of cheese cake for only 1.99 which is cheaper than alot of the coffee shops on Bardstown Road.
