Pitino/Maker's experience?

by Willie Myers » Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:22 am

good a.m., all!

just wondering how many of you may have ventured out (like myself) this a.m. in a (pretty much futile) effort to buy one of the Rick Pitino/Maker's Mark's that went on sale this a.m.?

I decided to take a shot at Liquor Barn(LB)/Beverage Whse.(BW) on Shelbyville Rd., as they're across the street from each other. They're both listed on their respective websites as opening @ 9:00am.

When I got over there - about 8:45 - there were about 30 folks in the BW cue and about 250+ in the LB cue. I figured BW might not have as much stock, but with the shorter cue, I went for it.

About 9, BW opened as advertised and we began to flow in. About 9:10, I noticed a commotion across the road - word had gotten out that, despite the website posting - LB was not opening until 10:00am!...and (it was claimed) they only had 16 bottles!!
Not unlike lemmings, a couple of hundred people tried to cross Shelbyville Rd en masse to get in the BW cue! It was a hoot! (and pretty dangerous...)

End of story, I got in to BW with only 8 bottles left and got mine, leaving still over 100 folks outside.
It was all pretty reminiscent of trying to get in to Honeybaked Ham on Saturday before Easter!

Hope any of you looking for the bottle had better luck!

good one, Steve! it's the 90...

there is some irony in having Rick do this promo with Maker's...
I recall a couple of years ago doing the Woodford tour. Near the end, they showed us an area where they stored "private" barrels. Word was, you could have your own barrel of Woodford aging for about $10k. And those barrels had nameplates on them...."Jerry Bruckheimer", etc. And there was one with the nameplate "Rick Pitino".
Must be that he promotes Maker's, but he invests in Woodford!

Overpriced whisky in a gaudy bottle with a creep's photo on the front? No thanks. 8)

Do they serve it at Porcini's?

Seriously, when I heard the announcement , I thought it was another Makers marketing misstep due to all the bad jokes that could be associated with the brand. Clearly, I was wrong!

I was wondering if they were using the same marketing company as they always have. Once upon a time MM advertising was really clever and effective. Now...well, it just seems to have diminished somewhat.

I don't know that anyone still cares that Pitino screwed the orange housewife of Jefferson County. Frankly, I never did.
