Brown Rice Sushi

by Deb Hall » Wed Mar 13, 2013 1:20 pm

I'm on a "no white rice" diet. Are there places is town that make sushi with brown rice? Or alternately, Asian food that has a brown rice option.
Thanks,
Deb

I don't know of anywhere that makes brown rice sushi, but I know I have had brown rice at:

Charim Korean
Roots/Heart and Soy
Zen Garden
Great Wall
PF Chang's

I think I have also had it at Oriental House, but am not positive on that one.

I buy the take-out sushi from Kroger on Bardstown Rd (Highlands) and often see brown rice sushi. If you don't see it in the case, they may be able to make it for you while you shop.

The one in Middletown is the same way, and it's much closer for Debbie

No really! The sushi at the Highlands Kroger is really pretty good. I always get the salmon sashimi and if they don't have it, they are usually really cool about making one up for me while I shop. I eat it at least once or twice a week. The quality is good.

I can't speak for the other Krogers though. I tend to shop in our little neighborhood. I have taken a look at the offerings at the ValuMarket in Mid-City Mall in the past and decided to keep walking. For some reason, the phrase "When it's brown, flush it down" just came to mind. No more drinks for me tonight. Walking away from the computer before I do any damage. (Robin - please edit if the last statement is too gross...or not as funny as I think it is right now)

The brown rice sushi at Whole Foods is great. They also have a multi-grain sushi which we like even better. We eat only veggie sushi but they probably have others with brown/multi-grain options.

Deb, I've had brown rice sushi from Whole Foods (as others have pointed out). They have a chef making theirs right in front of the customers during the day at least. I have always stayed away from Kroger's options as they appear to be prepared and packaged elsewhere.

As far as restaurants go, Caviar Japanese on Muhammed Ali between 4th and 5th offers brown rice sushi for a minimal upcharge ($1 I think).

The Kroger in Middletown has a sushi chef that is there making it fresh daily. I've usually seen him there around midday.

The Kroger on Goss has a sushi chef, too, brown rice sushi and he will do requests. Fresh Market has a sushi chef and I have had brown rice sushi from there, pretty good.

I'll add my voice to the Kroger sushi chorus. I shop at the Fern Creek Kroger, and I used to refer to it as the "redneck" Kroger because about all one could get there was fried chicken and beer. After the remodel, things have improved somewhat.

I also believed that the sushi was made elsewhere, but this is not the case. I caught the sushi chef red-handed Sunday afternoon making new batches. I've only discovered the wonders of sushi in the past few months, and I have to say that the Kroger variety is quite tasty and fresh. Is it Sake Blue quality? No, but it's in an affordable price range and convenient.

I just have to be careful to avoid wasabi. I am deathly allergic to that stuff. ~shudder~

I'm heading out there now to pick up a fresh load, so I may try the brown rice version if it's in stock.
