Soora Restaurant - Korean in the East End

by Mark Head » Wed Feb 08, 2012 8:51 am

Stopped by last night to give the new Korean place on Goose Creek a shot. And I'm very glad I did - the food was excellent. We were the only table in the dining room but there were some takeout orders being picked up. We started with Shumai (steamed dumplings) which were made fresh and delicious - they were succulent with a rich filling. I had the Doisot Bibimbap and my son had Kalbi - both entrees come with soup, salad, and the assorted Korean sides including Kim Chee. There was more than enough food.

They do not have BBQ at the table - but that won't keep me from returning. The staff was pleasant and very attentive to ensuring we enjoyed our meal. This was the best Korean meal I've ever had in Louisville and while that may not be saying a lot - I hope this little place can make a go of it in this cursed location. They are open for lunch and dinner Mon-Sat, closed Sunday.

We had the same favorable impression as you did Mark from our recent stop this past Saturday for lunch. Cindy had the dolsot bibimbap, son 1 had bulgogi, son 2 had the kalbi and I had bulgogi as well. Not knowing that soup and salad came with the meal (we didn't see that on the menu) we also ordered shumai and another dumpling app (whose name escapes me). Needless to say we had more than enough food. Everything was delicious and service was very friendly. Saturday afternoon there were 4 other tables occupied by Korean families. The only odd bit of the meal (to me) was when we asked for hot tea and they brought a steaming porcelain teapot with what I would swear was hot water. It was clear and hot and had no tea flavor at all. They assured me it was green tea and was supposed to have a very light flavor. I still think it was a pot of hot water. It certainly didn't keep us from enjoying the meal. This one goes in the keeper side of the column!

I have been meaning to post about this place since I went a week or so ago. I am glad someone beat me to it!

I went with a friend who is as obsessed with Korean food as I am. We went to college together in Michigan, where were became obsessed with Dok Boki, a dish I have raved about here in the past, made up of rice cakes and a very spicy sauce. They did not have the dish on the menu, but we noticed a soup made with the rice cakes and asked if they could make it. They did and it was the best I have had since my college days! I will definitely be requesting it again in the future. We were expecting an appetizer portion, based on the price they quoted us before they made it, but it was a huge plate that could easily have been my entire meal.

My friend got the Bulgogi and I had the Jap Chae Bap. Both were served with soup, salad and kim chee. Everything was amazing! There were a few other tables, but they all appeared to be Korean. I will definitely be going back and dragging as many people with me as I can.

Tried this place out last night (and again today!). It's wonderful. The bulgogi (full portion) is to die for. But as others have mentioned, you get a lot of food by default, so if you order a few appetizers, expect to have a take home box at the end of the meal.

Even if you don't like Korean food, I'd recommend checking it out.

I've been back twice and it's been consistent - my last visit the place was full. Just imagine if they were in St. Matthews!

Have written how much I like them in other threads, also.

While it's true they're a bit off the beaten path there for foodies in general, they are located in the center of what appears to be a large concentration of people of Asian and Korean ancestry!
