Reader looking for prime rib "Like the Fifth Quarter"

by Robin Garr » Fri Dec 23, 2011 9:40 am

I honestly can't answer this, but don't laugh - it's a question from a sincere, older person hoping to replicate what she liked. Any advice? Searching for casual family restaurants that advertise prime rib, I come up with J. Alexander's at Oxmoor, but I'm reluctant to recommend that which I have not tried. :P

Any advice?

Rafferty's has a pretty good prime rib sandwich, though it has been some time since I have eaten there.

If you want something like the old Fifth Quarter, try Cattleman's here in Shepherdsville, I could swear they cloned Fith Quarter's salad bar.

Rafferty's prime rib isn't bad, but the rest has moved mainly to frozen/steamed sides. Don't recommend.

J Alexanders is a chain, but each outlet has great, trained staff, decent foods, the special sides are unusual and very good (e.g.: spaghetti squash, acorn squash), and the prime rib can stand up to any steakhouse around! It is immaculate (you walk past the open kitchen, so it better be!), and generally has a somewhat limited menu (three steaks, one chicken, one pasta, two fish sort of list), and is one of the few chains we actually frequent.

I seem to remember way way back (pre Gannett, pre Robin) when it first opened that it was one of the very few non-local places to get a good review from the C-J.

I would not hesitate to recommend the prime rib.

Cattleman's will do a mean piece of meat, but the atmosphere might be a bit different (more Roadhousey). What about Del Frisco's?

I'll be honest, when I got a call for "a place like Fifth Quarter" I didn't think about places like Del Frisco's or Pat's.

J. Alexanders is a perfect recommendaion for what is requested. Some more mature members of my own family like it for the very reason requested - the prime rib. It's easy to find, easy to park, and beyond the fact that it's a chain - it's inoffensive. Has a 70s vibe for sure.

Dish on Market serves Prime Rib Monday through Saturday evening. We serve it traditional and with ten other "styles" which are toppings or preparations. We also have filet for those who don't like prime rib.

On the other hand, Anderson, thank $Deity that Dish does not much resemble The Fifth Quarter.
