10 chain restaurants worth visiting

by Mark R. » Fri Jun 03, 2011 11:42 pm

Interesting article: 10 chain restaurants worth visiting
The only two on the list that I've been to that I like our Jason's and the Melting Pot. The others I either haven't been to or don't like. (mostly don't like)

I've eaten at Chipotle quite a few times and really liked it, I found it to be better than Qdoba. Melting Pot I've eaten down in Atlanta and thought it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced for what it was. I've eaten Outback when on the road and found it to be pretty good for the price point and the steak to be a above average quality cut of meat.

We do Jason's weekly. Good, healthy food. Their salad bar has herbed feta cheese, kalmata olives, roasted red pepper hummus, and balsamic vinaigrette. Not typical salad bar fare.

In fairness, despite my preferential option for the local, I have to say that the Outback chain (OSI, which also includes Carrabba's, Bonefish Grill, and a couple of chains we don't have here, Roy's and Fleming's) wins critical acclaim - including mine - for being one of the few major restaurant chains that seems to understand the importance of quality building consumer loyalty and long-term profits, rather than being so intently focused on the quarterly balance sheet that nothing else seems important. I've found it in my heart to write reasonably favorable reviews of Outback, Bonefish and Carabba's.

I think Chipotle's meat and tortillas far surpass Qdoba or Moe's. You can taste the lime and cilantro in the rice too. I ate there most every day for my last year at UK. Every time I go to Qdoba, which is not often, I wonder why Chipotle hasn't come to Louisville yet. I also enjoy Outback time to time for its value in steaks. The best 10 dollar sirloin I've had so far.

As a deli chain, Jason's is good, but hard to beat local indies...rather surprised Outback made the list...never that impressed with their steaks (perhaps that's why they pictured the "Bloomin' Onion" in the article (?))...I would have replaced Outback with Cracker Barrel - comfort food that's consistently good...and where was Maggiano's??

I personally don't like Outback at all, I think it's partly due to the wait times they have if you want to eat at a regular time. I much prefer Longhorn if I'm going to a chain restaurant for steaks. I certainly do agree however about Carabba's and Bonefish (and Flemings). They seem to consistently have good quality food at reasonable prices. Certainly better than any other chains with the same specialties.

Hmmm...this would seem to validate Robin's view, indicating alot of folks seem to like OB.

Not necessarily. Cheddar's always have a wait, and I consider it an abominable crime against nature. ;)

Definitely true! Fortunately they didn't make the list.

Guess I need to try Chipotle again! Been there once and it was very bland, mostly rice and thought it was pricey for a burrito with 3 cups of rice and 6 pieces of chicken. I may have found the worst of the worst locations.

I'd agree that Maggiano's should be on that list. Never had a bad experience and have been to several locations, great service, great food!

It's still my opinion that Louisville has bad examples of Cheddar's. They recently opened some new locations around Knoxville and that's where everyone wants to go. I gave in and went with one friend, the wait was 15 minutes on a Friday night even though the place was packed, they were turning tables super fast. The service was good, and the food was pretty decent. It's hard to beat for the price, not going to argue that it's the best out there, if the choice is mine there's a local chain that I prefer...but they are very consistent in TN and can't say I've ever had anything subpar at those locations.

I was an Outbacker for 5 years and still eat there on occasion. They do things right in my opinion and I know most of the staff in different restaurants. I always eat at the bar. Never have to wait.

I was extremely disappointed with Chipotle the one time I tried it in Lexington. I couldn't even eat half of my burrito - it was just not good. Qdoba, Moe's and Salsarita's are all much better.

California Pizza Kitchen doesn't even compare to the local pizzerias around here.

Chipotle is fantastic. It's right at the top of my list of restaurants I wish we had in Louisville. Five Guys was up there, too, until they opened a few stores here recently.

In my opinion it blows Qdoba and Moe's out of the water. The ingredients are fresher, the flavors are better--especially the meats--and the guacamole is excellent. I do prefer the tacos, as they tend to display the flavor of the meat better than the burritos, which can cover the meat up with all the beans and rice.

I seem to remember the last time there was a discussion of Chipotle here, everyone was comparing it unfavorably to local Mexican restaurants. Which is really apples to oranges--Chipotle isn't trying to be authentic Mexican food.

Other than a few choice taquerias - neither is anyone else.
