New Mexican Place in Fern Creek

by Terri Beam » Tue May 10, 2011 4:31 pm

Spotted in Fern Creek the other day: Adobo Mexican Restaurant going into the old Our Best location.

No offense to purveyors of Mexican cuisine, but we're already overrun in the Creek/Highview/J-town area. It had better be good, real good.

I was hoping the title of this post meant cuisine from New Mexico. Now that would rock.

Don't mean to highjack the original post, but I'm with Will. Santa Fe and Taos are close to heaven in more ways than one, especially the food.

I drove by this place. It looks very respectable. Has anybody tried the food? Where is Taos?

They have an Indian Fry Bread sandwich at the Cheesecake Factory, though I haven't tried it. Not many places you can get that!! Taco Bell Chalupas are the closest thing.

Red or Green? It defines you. Ordering "Christmas style" means you are non committal.
It's like the difference between the Beatles or Stones. It's OK to like them both, but sooner or later you have to decide which one you prefer.

I'm not sure; living in Fern Creek. I'll wait to hear. Hopefully it won't be to bad.

Tried El Caporal off of Hurstbourne and it was not good. Tried Fiesta Mexicana Grill near Westport and it was just Ok. The quest continues. I really, really detest that cheese that tastes like plastic velveeta. Why it has to be on every plate is beyond me. La Rosita is still the best.

Im with Will and David on this one. My wife and I have been living in Santa Fe since December. New Mexican food is great. Have to get my red or green fix about every day. Just went to Taos for the first time last weekend. Beautiful!! Had dinner at a place called Orlando's. Really good eats.

And I'm with Will, David and Jeff T, too. There's a little hole-in-the-wall mexican place in Sarasota, hidden in the middle of some nondescript strip center, where the owner is a New Mexico transplant and prepares his food "New Mexico style." Fabulous.

*hijacks the thread back*

I did pop in to Adobo over the weekend. I intend to write a review when I have a few spare moments.

The short story: Decent food, decent service. I'm inclined to like it better than the other Fern Creek Mexican offerings. One plus: no chihuahua cheese on my burrito. Smaller servings than the others in the area, but I'm ok with that.

We finally made it to Adobo Mexican in Fern Creek. It is located at 5612 Bardstown Road, yes in the old Our Best location (between Hurstbourne Lane and "downtown" Fern Creek, across from Rite Aid). We had a great time, with very good food. Your first impression might be another El Napol. But check out the menu: different takes on standard items: Cilantro Pesto Burrito; Enchiladas Divorciadas (two chicken enchiladas one covered in cilantro cream sauce, the other with sour cream sauce; Tilapia ala Plancha (chili-rubbed fish); carnitas tacos. Not your standard El Napol menu. Maybe not up to La Rosita or a taqueria, I'm not qualified to judge that, but we we enjoyed. In my opinion El Mundo and Hanava Rumba have the best margaritas in town, our group tried several here. These are right up there with those two fine establishment. If you are out in Fern Creek, I know, Fern Creek, give this a try.

Dissenting opinion here.I didn't want to start a topic after eating there because it was so underwhelming, but now that there is a thread...

I ate there last week and my first impression was 'They won't be here long'. I was there at 6pmish, a pretty prime dinner time and there were 4 occupied tables in the entire place. Despite the lack of customers, the service was slow and very 'meh' in terms of friendliness and helpfulness. Almost robotic, actually.

I had the enchiladas de tomatosomething (forgot the exact name, but it was plate of enchiladas in a red tomato sauce, so...) The three enchiladas were poorly rolled and very sparsely filled with chicken. They were swimming in a pool of horribly bland sauce - almost as bland as the generic, obviously canned 'salsa in a plastic carafe' that they served with the nearly stale tortilla chips. Rice and beans on the side, both very generic and not different from any other joint in town. Also on the side was a small pile of mushy steamed squash and other veggies that had enough salt in it to require a warning label from the American Heart Association - they tasted like someone had spilled a jar of Goya Adobo on them and tried to brush it off before serving instead of starting over.

The carafe of salsa that came with the chips had obviously been stored in a very cold fridge and was WAY overchilled. Not a fan of bland, nearly frozen salsa, so this did not please me.

I'll stick with Puerto Vallarta when I'm looking for generic TexMex in the 'Creek. Cheaper, pretty much the same menu, and a much higher level of service. And the beer is cheaper.

John, something that you said in your review, made me think of one other important factor. Yes, the Thursday evening we were there, it was not close to full. The location is awful, behind the ice cream shop. You cannot see it from Bardstown Road, and I did not see any other entrance than the one into the larger shopping center. Second, yes it was absolutely more expensive than an El Napol. Those two factors may hurt more than our difference of opinion on the food. Finally, honest review, you did not enjoy, we did. Thanks for the insight.
