Bill Bolands was the name of a restaurant at bardstiwn and taylorsville roads. Name of jockey who rode sword dancer, thanks to Louisville magazine - excellent derby edition.

Bill Boland's was the predecessor to John E's, Ellen. Bardstown at Hikes Lane. I'm certain about this, unless there was an *earlier* Bill Boland's closer in to town.

I think the sign had a picture of a guy wearing a bowler hat?

Bill Bolands was originally at Bowman Field in the space now occupied by Le Relais.

I remember a Hickory House on the corner on Bardstown and Taylorsville rd, probably in the late 70's.

That's what I thought, too, Fred.

Yep! I loved their barbecue, which fell off the bone. Lexington's Columbia Steakhouse also tried a branch in that location (and another near Hurstbourne and Shelbyville Road) in the '80s.

Doesn't sound right to me. Hoe Kow opened there in 1947, the owner told me in an interview in the early '80s. She was the first commercial user of the property after Louisville's commercial airport operations moved to Standiford Field, which had been military during WWII. Le Relais came in around 1985ish, after Hoe Kow moved out to Middletown (where it fizzled). A pasta bar filled in the gap between Hoe Kow and Le Relais very briefly, but I don't see how Bill Boland fits in to this. I'm also inclined to trust Fred's recollections.

I was told by my 99.5 year old Aunt Helen ... she remembers everything about Louisville especially downtown Louisville. She should write a book ..

The pasta bar was Bico Mattei -- owned by the same family that had Trattoria Mattei out on Shelbyville Road. A pretty good place, as I recall.

And take it from a local old fart -- Boland's was never in that location. Always at Bardstown and Hikes Lane.

I remember going to the Hickory House there when i was a kid. I was a manager with Columbia Steakhouse and opened the one on Taylorsville Rd and helped open the Shelbyville Rd store. My wife went into labor, with our 2nd child, while I was closing one night ( Jan 8 1986) on Taylorsville Rd. :D

Wasn't Hickory House close to La Normandie on Taylorsville? I distinctly remember that they spelled it with an "ie" instead of a "y.' We always ate there before seeing a movie at The Bard. It was some impressive place for a kid seeing "Journey to the Center of the Earth." I couldn't tell you much about the food other than it was "fancy." I miss those days. I think there was an ice cream place nearby, too. The Creamery? Great 'real' shakes!
When in doubt, add more wine.

At some point I think La Normandie moved to Bardstown Rd. somewhere kinda across from the Homemade Pie Kitchen?

Yeah, as late as the '80s, but I don't think it was operating as a full-service restaurant there. Memory is fuzzy, but it was either mostly catering or mostly a bar?
