Any good eats before Roller Derby

by Amy Smalley » Fri Mar 25, 2011 12:44 pm

A couple of friends and I are taking our pre-teen daughters to see a match of the Derby City Roller Girls tomorrow night at the Manslick Roller Dome. It is on Gagel Ave. We'd like to go to dinner before but I'm not very familiar with this part of town. I know some of the Vietnemese places are not too far but some of the girls are not that adventurous in this regard. Can anyone recommend some places that aren't too far from the Rollerdome and might be something kids would eat? We really like Santa Fe Grill but I'm not sure how close that is to the Rollerdome. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Amy

The closest places I can think of in that area of Shively are a Rooster's, Penn Station, Texas Roadhouse or Captain D's.

Annie's Cafe isn't that far out of your way and they have a slew of Chinese-American dishes on the menu there as well.
To get to Annie's, I'm assuming you'll be heading west on the Watterson to head to Roller Derby so you just take the 3rd St.-Southern Parkway exit and go south on Southern Parkway about a 1/4 mile to the second stop light which should be Woodlawn Ave, take a left and Annie's will be on your right in the middle of the block. :D

Great recommendations so far. What is the name of the Italian place? I would like more info on this one.

Jimbo's sounds intriguing. That may be a very good option. I been to VK and enjoyed immensely but I have wanted to give Annie's cafe a go. I looked at Annie's menu online and didn't really see any Chinese dishes except lomein and fried rice. Maybe it's an unpublished menu... I just don't think several of these girls will go for Vietnamese :(

Thanks guys!

I cannot for the life of me remember the name. It's in the old Bearno's a few blocks up from Bonnie and Clydes. THere was a thread on here 2 months ago.

Tuscany, isn't it? Here's my review of the one on Outer Loop when it was new:

Really! It was run by a Mexican family, but the guy had lived and cooked in Italy and made darn good Italian.

I also heard Little Jerusalem is over that way. Is it still in business? Is the Tuscany at the Outer Loop still Italian?

Amy

Little Jerusalem has been closed for some time.
I did think of one other place you might try...

Zanzabar on Preston going south has some darn good eats and you could impress your pre-teens by going there, as it has quite the hipster clientele. Plus...
I mean really; You're on your way to Roller Derby. How much cooler could you be?

Roosters is right at Dixie and the Watterson, I'd go there, the food and service is great especially if you have people that aren't into ethnic stuff. could go to Windy City pizza at 4th and Central also..

O'Bryans is a little dive bar off Dixie on Flintlock. They have the best fried fish in town. There is also Bonnie & Clydes on Dixie if you are in the mood for pizza. And then, of course, there is the Electric cowboy.
