Unique Wedding/Reception locations... and...

by Scott Hack » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:21 pm

Although not fully restaurant related, I know the community here is full of people in the know... and a lot of you are probably involved in helping put together large groups of people and serving them food, and I need your assistance!

So this past week I asked my girlfriend to marry me and she took pity on me and said yes! We really are just concentrating on enjoying things and making it through the holiday season, but we keep getting asked a lot of questions about dates, places, etc -- so we decided we should start having some discussions. As I told her, we can tell people we are "looking" at this and that, and we don't have to commit to anything until much later.

That said, I'd appreciate any suggestions for unique wedding ceremony and or reception locations. I own a photo booth company with my brother and we do probably 20-25 weddings a year, but I'm hoping the forum will have some suggestions that I'm not aware of. We've done Mellwood Art Center, Henry Clay, Glassworks, Ali Center, Science Center, Churchhill Downs, Slugger Field, Locust Grove, Joe Hubers, A B&B in Milton, KY. I've done events at Yew Dell, but I am aware of that location. We are leaning towards the fall season. Probably not outdoors, and if I had to guess 250+ people.

I'm also curious about catering ( and I realize that some locations may limit who is available, but I'd like to hear it all ) Feel free to PM too if you'd prefer to not have your thoughts public.

Thanks!

ok at the bardstown Opry property. They built a beautiful, huge barn which you can decorate and bring in your own food and drinks. A beautiful place! I think the website iswww.musicmansoundstage

Gorgeous setting.

Kye's also does a great job.

Congrats!

We were married last June at Gingerwoods. There is an option of using the deck and surrounding property, but I think the dark wood inside would make a nice backdrop for a fall wedding. You can also use whatever caterer, but you may have to pay extra if it's not one of their favorites.

Scott
When brainstorming possible events for our food truck I thought that it would be unique and cost effective option to have a food truck at outdoor receptions. Menus are definitely open and customizable and it would be something different, especially if there were a lot of foodies there.

I didn't really intend to pump my business here but was just offering another possible option to make the experience a bit more unique.

Congratulations on your engagement!
The Sawyer-Hayes Center is my new favorite place to cater. The building is beautiful and can definitely accommodate your wedding.

The Women's Club of Louisville has a unique place to host your wedding as well. (This is where we hosted our wedding reception)

Also, I personally can cater any size function within any budget.

Congratulations! We went to a wedding this fall that was at the Fraser museum. The wedding itself was held on the rooftop which is a very pretty location. This ceremony was held just before sunset so you can see the illuminated skyline in the background. The floor below is where the reception was held. It's a large area that can be divider off if desired. It's certainly worth a look

The selection of venues really narrows down when you get to over 200 people.

Several places have already been suggested, but a few others that I think should be able to accommodate 250+ would be The Gillespie, The Olmsted, The Starks Building, and the Crescent Hill Women's Club.

For a more unusual venue, we delivered a wedding cake to the Planetarium today.
The couple arranged for a star show and laser show for after dinner. I'm not sure what the capacity is though.

Just putting in a good word for Dan. The guy has got it going on when it comes to putting together good food and a good presentation.

Thanks everyone!

Leah, we very well could make the downtown show, but my future mother-in-law is a snow bird and she leaves town on December 28th, so we are trying to make a few decisions sooner then later. I've also already booked 2 photo booth events in time span that we are considering, so I've already lost a few dates... oops! That said, your website with the venue list has been great.

Dan, sent an email about the Sawyer Hayes building -- definitely not something I was aware of, or would have thought of. I'm going to drive by it tonight and check it out. I'm worried it might be too small, but we are still putting together the guest list. Since it is a state run facility, they are on holiday/fiscal break of some sort, so I don't know if it is available or not.

We hope to stay on the Kentucky side of the river. I think Gingerwoods is a bit too small for us as well. Does anyone have info for The Starks Building? (edit : Never mind - Found it! I didn't know they had event space there. I thought it was all retail or office stuff.

My hubby and I had our reception at the First Trust Center. It's all marble and mahogany , and has (or at least HAD) lots of fountains. It was gorgeous. Plus, there is a lovely staircase for the bride to make her entrance, if you get married there.

There's also a space on the first floor of the lace building that is extremely nice. I'm not quite sure who to talk to about it but we have attended a couple of events there. It's a tiered layout with large expanses of windows. It also his kitchen space for use by the caterer.

Many many warm wishes and congratulations Scott!
I think the Ali Center has space available for Receptions as well as the Downs Museum but I'm not sure how many they can handle. Might consider the Belle of Louisville which would be beautiful in the fall. Also the Peterson- Dumesnil House (www.petersondumesnil.org)

I'm waiting on info back from the Ali Center. The lace building, assuming that is the Kaden Tower? I've got info from them and it looks interesting, didn't realize it had different tiers.

Carla, do you think the Peterson-Dumesnil house is big enough? I looked at the floor plan and crossed it off the list of potentials because it looks so small/choppy on the layout.

Off to google First Trust Center ...

Thanks!
