Food on a stick

by Steve P » Sat Aug 28, 2010 12:57 pm

I was reading my old "home town" paper (MSP Star Tribune) online this week and noticed that the Minnesota State fair was once again self proclaiming a record for the number of food items served "on a stick"....60 different items. Never having been to the KY State fair (and having sworn off ALL State fairs years ago) I was wondering if this foodie phenomenon was as prevalent here in the Bluegrass ?

Steve, we certainly don't do Fair Food on a Stick like Minnesota does, but the concept is not unfamiliar here, as shown in this picture I took at the 2006 Fair.

Here's my article that accompanied that. There's brief mention of food-on-a-stick down toward the end.

Melding this with another current hot forum topic, though, I think I've got a great idea for Fair fare that could satisfy the most refined of palates:

Sweetbreads on a stick!

Think it'll sell?

My Grandfather owned a Meat Mkt. on Barrett Ave in the 40's and 50's called Lawrence's Market and according to my Dad "City Chicken" was a huge seller. Mostly butcher scraps (Veal) skewered. Unfortunately this has fallen to the past, and while I love our local Meat Markets its only prepared by special request. However, Avril & Bleh in Cinn. has them on a regular basis its worth the trip if your in the neighborhood, they are also known for making sausages. 37 different varities I do believe. They are super busy all the time when you walk in, take a number. Oh, two words- Ham Salad. I'm a regular customer, was there just yesterday. Warning, this place is very addictive and they do ship.

To answer your question, we went to the fair last Sunday, and the only food on a stick I saw was corn dogs. To be honest though, I wasn't really looking for stickified food.

As state fairs go, for me the food selection was pretty "meh". From what I saw on the news the big food attraction was the hamburger on a Krispy Kreme bun, though their line didn't seem terribly long.

We went to the Fair on Tuesday with the grandkids. I saw the usual: chicken, pork butt, corn dog, various fried sweets and ice cream in sticks. Saw the Krispie Kreme hamburger stand, had NO interest. We had lunch tickets for the Kroger picnic (son works there), so we did not eat much from the vendors. They were giving away Dippin Dots (one of my weaknesses) in the South Wing, so that helped my sugar cravings after looking at the culinary section.

I love food on a stick and would love to see the kind of a concept here. I believe I wrote up a mock menu for this kind of a thing a year or so ago. It's interesting from an execution standpoint. A lot of prep and then a little a la minute work.

A Westernized Yakitori bar on Bardstown Rd or by 4th St Live slinging out these little delicacies to revelers.

Or even a food cart doing the same over open coals and a fry-daddy.

Sweetbreads = yes, thank you and may I have another?

I liked this review of the fried beer, but mostly because of the last line:

But it does beg the question, What goes best with fried beer? Probably a pint of wings.
