Denver CO Places/Ideas

by RichardM » Thu Apr 29, 2010 7:26 pm

Fellow Forumites,

This next week we are going to be in Denver to see our younger daughter, attend her graduation, and SEE THE GRANDKIDS. Guess which is big with us?

Would appreciate any personal favorites and/or places to avoid in the mile high city. We'll not have a lot of time but want to take them out for dinner one day whilst we are out there. Probably Friday or Sunday (Mother's Day). We have searched around on the web but it is always nice to get some ideas from those here who we know and trust.

Does anyone know if the Broker is still any good? A dynamite lunch place would be great.

We'll await any comments or ideas you all have.

Hope every one has the winner for the Derby - Nobles Promise.

They've moved since we lived in Denver several years ago, but Yanni's was always great if you like Greek. They do spit roasted lamb on Sundays starting at 1:00 and Yanni likes to mingle and pass out shots of Ouzo. The baklava ice cream with Godiva liqueur is darn good, too.

A good friend of mine lives in Denver and a couple of local spots I have consistently been impressed with:

Snooze: great breakfast!, i've returned two days in a row it was so good.
Lola's: wonderful for lunch & dinner. guacamole made at your table. food is fantastic and very upbeat and fun environment. INcredible view of downtown Denver, day or night.
Sushi Den: Incredible! wonderful service and the sushi is out of this world, creative, fresh and great vibe! dinner only I think.

Hope these help! and enjoy!

I just had an EXCELLENT charcuterie at Le Central for brunch yesterday: Large portions - Pork Rillette with duck fat - Chicken liver pate - Head cheese (about 1 in think on the rillette & Pate)
It was $9.00 with the trimmings and enough that I didn't need anything else.

Le Central is consistently just above average in execution but below average on price.

I tried this in the travel section a day ago, but I think that section gets overlooked as I only got 10 reads and no replys. It's ashame because I really respect everyone's opinion on this forum and certainly don't like to trust Trip Advisor, etc on matters of food. It's really a cool unique thing Robin has going here, but I confess that I'm like most everyone else, I don't go to that section until I need help...shame on me! Maybe if we created "stickys" in that forum with popular destination cities and we all considered ot our duty as a fourmite to contribte pictures (food porn) and notes about our dining after our travels it would be more useful? What the hell do I know? Maybe it would make it less useful...there's my $.02 that no one asked for.

Anyway, here's my post from the travel forum:

I'm looking for Denver Dining suggestions...I'll be staying in LoDo downtown so I'd like to keep it close if possible...anyone have any ideas? I've made reservations at TAG (not sure about this place as it looks fairly fussy) and Tamayo based exclusively on Frommer's recommendations, but I'd be more than willing to change reservations if someone in the know has other ideas. We'd like to try something we don't get in Louisville...not sure how my current reservations fit that bill. What are the two "must try" places in LoDo?

Thanks for your input friends!

If you are a carnivore - Rodezio in LoDo is fantastic. We did not get downtown on our last visit in May since DD's graduation was in Greeley and she lives in Arvada. i would look at the other suggestions from our may post - i have never had a bad recco here. :D

I think the cause is that to get to the "Travel Forum," you have to go all the way back out to the "Board Index."

I propose there be a link to the travel section from the "Louisville Forums" index, which also lists the Kitchen, All About Louisville, etc. forums.

Steuben's is great

and there are a lot of great breweries in the area

(Great Divide, Breckenridge, Avery, Left Hand, Boulder, New Belgium, etc)

Went last fall, these were our favorites:

Luca D'Italia: had some fantastic butter-poached lobster pasta here. Everything else was good too. Probably our overall favorite. http://www.lucadenver.com/

Bones: noodle shop. Lots of fun! This is and the above are both owned by a team that runs lots of fine dining in Denver (kind of like Jean Robert in Cincy a few years ago--except it seems like this Denver team has a MUCH better handle on quality control than Robert) http://www.bonesdenver.com/

Rioja: everything was good here, but after all the raves we were mildly unimpressed. Not up with Louisville's best, I thought. Certainly a solid choice, though, and a fun atmosphere. Book ahead. http://www.riojadenver.com/

TAG: sushi and eclectic. A fun time. This places puts style first, but the food was good nonetheless. http://www.tag-restaurant.com/
